Nearly four years after her farewell at the US Open 2022 and dressed in black, Serena Williams reappeared in a white dress in her second stage as a professional tennis player alongside the great promise of current tennis: Victoria Mboko. The American and the Canadian shone in their debut at the 2026 WTA Queen’s after defeating Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez in the first round with a score of 7-6(2) 6-2.

For the first time playing together, the result has been better than expected, considering the inactivity of the 23-time Grand Slam champion and Mboko’s challenge of transitioning from clay to grass in less than a week. Now they aim to keep dreaming, facing the duo of Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the second round of the London tournament.

Serena Williams’s Experience Returning to the Tennis Courts Nearly Four Years After Retiring

But before facing the demanding match against the Canadian and the German, Serena and Victoria shared their thoughts on their much-anticipated debut in on-court interviews. The stands at Queen’s Andy Murray court erupted when the younger Williams sister took the mic.

“It was so much fun. I had an absolute blast playing with Vicky. She really held it down and played the big points well, and I could rely on her. We had never played together before, but it felt so natural that it was actually really fun,” stated the 44-year-old tennis player.

The age gap between the American and the Canadian is a whopping 25 years. Nevertheless, Mboko has not witnessed much of Serena’s success, but that doesn’t stop her from being one of her role models: “First and foremost, I feel extremely honored to play with you, Serena. It’s a huge privilege to stand by your side, and honestly, I had an amazing time. We really enjoyed ourselves on the court, so I’m thrilled to be playing by your side, and now we aim for more.”

Serena Williams Explains the Reason for Her Return to Professional Tennis

Serena has given several reasons justifying her return to the tennis courts, but this time, she provided a new argument that elicited laughter from the audience: “I just had nothing better to do anymore. I got tired of sitting at home. My daughters are on summer vacation, so why not? And, of course, being able to do it at Queen’s, a tournament that didn’t have a women’s event when I was in my singles career.”

Something that she finds particularly exciting is playing for the first time in a tournament after more than 27 years in her career: “I never had the chance to play here. It was always male-only, but it feels truly special to be in such an iconic venue where I have seen so many friends win and play well, and just witness so many great matches. It’s pretty cool,” concluded Serena Williams, who, alongside Victoria Mboko, will seize one more chance to enjoy an unusual but appreciated comeback.
