{"id":726443,"date":"2026-06-10T01:42:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T01:42:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/726443\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T01:42:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T01:42:13","slug":"new-laboratory-made-opioid-showing-up-in-b-c-s-unregulated-drug-supply-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/726443\/","title":{"rendered":"New laboratory-made opioid showing up in B.C.&#8217;s unregulated drug supply"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Health officials in British Columbia are warning drug users about a new laboratory-made opioid that&#8217;s made its way into the unregulated drug supply in the province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Last week, Interior Health issued a drug alert for Penticton, B.C., where a sample of a fentanyl-based street drug known as &#8220;down&#8221; was found to contain cychlorphine, among other things, significantly increasing the risk of drug overdose or poisoning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/towardtheheart.com\/assets\/uploads\/1779221856eOQulVeHw1Uu29bF0Dy50rVjih7eKth0l7LXxgt.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Cychlorphine;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Cychlorphine&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Cychlorphine<\/a>, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), is about 10 times more potent than fentanyl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The substance can cause sedation and slow or stop breathing, the BCCDC said, adding that other people who ingest high doses of the drug have experienced nausea, vomiting and sweating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Early studies suggest cychlorphine is a long-acting opioid. Effects may last up to 48 hours,&#8221; the BCCDC said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When used with other substances, it can be particularly dangerous, the centre said. For example, if used with benzodiazepines, it can cause dangerous breathing problems.
