{"id":726919,"date":"2026-06-10T06:43:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T06:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/726919\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T06:43:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T06:43:17","slug":"usask-medical-researcher-earns-prestigious-stem-cell-network-honours-in-canada-gx94-radio-now-thats-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/726919\/","title":{"rendered":"USask medical researcher earns prestigious Stem Cell Network honours in Canada | GX94 Radio &#8211; Now That&#8217;s Country!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SASKATOON\u00a0\u2014\u00a0As a former schoolteacher, Dr. Tyler Wenzel (PhD) has plenty of experience working with kids.<\/p>\n<p>His background in the classroom might explain why the neuroscientist\u2019s newest research focuses on using stem cell models to develop innovative, faster, and safer treatment of dangerous neurological conditions in children.<\/p>\n<p>And that innovative work is getting noticed. Wenzel, an assistant professor at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Medicine, recently received one of the Stem Cell Network (SCN) 25 for 25 Silver Anniversary Awards presented as part of the network\u2019s 25th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Wenzel was given an SCN Rising Star Award as an early-career researcher who has demonstrated potential for major impact in the field. He is the only researcher in Saskatchewan to be awarded one of the SCN\u2019s Silver Anniversary Awards in any category.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work in pediatric diseases, and not many people know about or study pediatric diseases. It\u2019s great to have an acknowledgement that someone sees this work and it has value,\u201d Wenzel said. \u201cOne in 12 Canadians have rare diseases, and two-thirds of them are children. This is well over a million children. These diseases are often fatal. Many of these kids will not live to see their 10th birthday because of the lack of research focused on developing or improving treatments for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stem cells are a kind of cell produced in the body that have not developed into specialized types of cells like blood or brain cells. Due to their regenerative properties and unspecialized nature, stem cells have been a core part of modern medical research and innovative treatments.<\/p>\n<p>Wenzel\u2019s work with stem cells specifically involves looking at the brain. He has developed tiny \u201cmini-brain\u201d organoids \u2013 tiny three-dimensional models made from human tissue \u2013 by manipulating stem cells into brain cells.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"_m8a8368\" id=\"file-4409726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/_m8a8368.jpg;w=960.jpeg\"\/>Dr. Tyler Wenzel (PhD), a neuroscientist and assistant professor at USask, works in his lab on campus. Photo by David Stobbe<\/p>\n<p>Because those brain organoids function like human brains, Wenzel\u2019s lab can safely and accurately test potential treatment options and strategies for neurological conditions on human cells.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can we study human disease, if we\u2019re not using human tissue?\u201d he said. \u201cWith these stem cells, we basically have an unlimited supply of human tissue, which means we can have a system where we can focus on the human aspects of disease and treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His current work is in pediatric neurological conditions. Similar to treatments for leukemia and other cancers, the common treatment for many dangerous neurological conditions involves a bone marrow transplant or a stem cell transplant \u2013 procedures that first involve chemotherapy or irradiation and have significant mortality rates.<\/p>\n<p>For treating deadly neurological conditions in infants and young children, such as X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, Wenzel is aiming to establish a procedure where important microglia \u2013 brain immune cells \u2013 can be delivered directly to the brain without the need for chemotherapy or irradiation.<\/p>\n<p>Wenzel said receiving this recognition from the SCN was extremely validating for the work he is leading at USask.<\/p>\n<p>And as the only Saskatchewan-based researcher on the list, and as a schoolteacher-turned-researcher who is still finding ways to help kids, Wenzel said he hopes up-and-coming stem cell researchers will see that great things can be accomplished in the field here at USask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAwards like this recognize the investment that Saskatchewan has put into our work,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope it shows people in the same field as me \u2013 whether the stem cell or maternal and child health field \u2013 that you can move here and get support, and that you will also have a network to help you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>-Submitted by University of Saskatchewan\u00a0media relations<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SASKATOON\u00a0\u2014\u00a0As a former schoolteacher, Dr. Tyler Wenzel (PhD) has plenty of experience working with kids.
