It\u2019s no secret that there are severa<\/a>l<\/a> major pros and cons <\/a>associated with using weight loss<\/a> jabs like Ozempic <\/a>or Mounjaro<\/a>.<\/p>\n But the cons don\u2019t seem to be putting Brits off, as a whopping 1.6 million used\u00a0GLP-1s last year.<\/p>\n Some of those will likely have experienced unpleasant side effects, with everything from nausea to vision changes<\/a> listed as risks of taking the medications.<\/p>\n And recently, another unwanted consequence has come to light, and it\u2019s been dubbed \u2018Ozempic<\/a> butt\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n Here\u2019s everything you need to know about it\u2026<\/p>\n What is Ozempic butt?<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018Ozempic butt is a term that has emerged to describe the loss of volume or a flatter appearance of the buttocks that some people notice after significant weight loss while taking medications such as Wegovy or Mounjaro<\/a>,\u2019 Dr Suzanne Wylie, a GP and medical adviser for IQdoctor<\/a>, tells Metro.<\/p>\n Despite the name, it\u2019s worth noting that this isn\u2019t actually a direct side effect of the drug itself, but rather a consequence of rapidly losing weight.\u00a0<\/p>\n Dr Suzanne continues: \u2018When people lose a substantial amount of weight, they typically lose both fat and some muscle mass, and this can alter body shape, including around the buttocks.\u2019<\/p>\n Because of this, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons says they\u2019ve seen a \u2018noticeable uptick\u2019 in procedures related to \u2018restoring shape to the lower regions of the body\u2019.<\/p>\n However, it\u2019s not just the buttocks where this loss of muscle can occur in the body.\u00a0<\/p>\n Studies have suggested that 25 to 40% of weight loss in those taking the likes of Ozempic and Mounjaro is actually down to a reduction in lean body mass \u2013 including muscle.\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t While some might want to resolve the issue with plastic surgery, Dr Suzanne says the biggest concern is for overall health<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u2018Muscle plays an important role in strength, mobility, and overall health, so we want people to preserve as much muscle as possible while losing excess body fat,\u2019 the expert explains.<\/p>\n \u2018The best way to do this is through regular resistance exercise, such as weight training, squats, lunges, or other strength-based activities, alongside eating enough protein.\u2019<\/p>\n The NHS<\/a> recommends that adults complete muscle-strengthening exercises that work all the body\u2019s major muscle groups at least twice a week.<\/p>\n This could include stair climbing, chair-based exercises, and even heavy gardening, e.g. digging and pushing a lawn mower.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re concerned, check with your GP or an exercise specialist to ensure you\u2019re starting at an appropriate exercise level for your ability.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tHave you used weight loss injections like Ozempic?<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tSign up to Metro’s The Slice newsletter for your guide to what’s on in London, with trusted reviews, offers and giveaways.<\/p>\n Could a new drug help?<\/p>\n A new drug that helps promote muscle growth is currently being tested in clinical trials, and it\u2019s been suggested that it could help those taking GLP-1s avoid muscle loss.<\/p>\n The medication, which is given into a vein as an infusion, is known as apitegromab,<\/a> and it works by blocking myostatin \u2013 the protein that is involved in breaking down muscles.<\/p>\n In a trial of 102 participants (mostly women), 51 were given apitegromab and tirzepatide, while the other 51 took tirzepatide and a placebo, for 24 weeks. <\/p>\n At the end of the study, those who had been given apitegromab were found to have lost 1.63kg of lean mass, while those taking the placebo lost 3.5kg of lean mass. <\/p>\n Researchers have said the findings so far have been \u2018promising\u2019, but more evidence is needed to check safety and long-term health outcomes.<\/p>\n Apitegromab is also being explored as a potential treatment for other health conditions that impact muscles, such as spinal muscular atrophy.<\/p>\n Arrow Arrow Arrow![\"Hand](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SEI_250001690-1fc0.jpg\")
