Kimi Antonelli’s victory last weekend in the Monaco Grand Prix once again highlighted the Mercedes driver’s prowess behind the wheel as he left his rivals in the distance.<\/p>\n
The 19-year-old Italian’s first win in the Principality also meant he broke yet more records in just his second season of Formula 1.<\/p>\n
But what accolades did he claim and, statistically, what does it mean for his championship chances?<\/p>\n
Antonelli continues to rewrite the record book<\/p>\n
Since his maiden F1 victory at the Chinese Grand Prix back in March, Antonelli<\/a> has been unstoppable, winning in Japan, Miami, Canada and last weekend, Monaco.<\/p>\n His run of five victories on the bounce puts him in good company, with World Champions Jack Brabham<\/a>, Jim Clark<\/a> and Nigel Mansell<\/a> having also achieved the feat during their careers, as well as Lewis Hamilton<\/a> who has done it twice previously.<\/p>\n Only Max Verstappen<\/a>, Sebastian Vettel<\/a>, Alberto Ascari<\/a>, Michael Schumacher<\/a> and Nico Rosberg<\/a> have achieved a longer streak, meaning no driver who has reached five consecutive wins has not won a World Championship.<\/p>\n The Mercedes<\/a> driver also became the youngest to win the Monaco Grand Prix<\/a>, which signifies a remarkable turnaround from 12 months ago, when Antonelli finished P18 and last of the classified runners.<\/p>\n Antonelli’s victory in Monte Carlo was also his first career Grand Slam, whereby he achieved the win, pole position, fastest lap and led all 78-laps of Sunday’s Grand Prix.<\/p>\n Monaco’s tight and twisty layout means overtaking has always been at premium and, as a result, the victor in six out of the last eight editions has started from pole position.<\/p>\n Such was Antonelli’s dominance that his lead at one stage stood at nearly 30 seconds which, were it not for a late Safety Car and red flag, would have been the biggest winning margin in Monaco during the 21st Century.<\/p>\n He is only the 28th driver to achieve the feat, with Clark holding the outright record with eight Grand Slams, while Hamilton and Verstappen both currently have six.<\/p>\n
