{"id":728186,"date":"2026-06-10T20:03:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T20:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/728186\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T20:03:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T20:03:09","slug":"edmonton-chinatown-gate-project-community-association-pulls-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/728186\/","title":{"rendered":"Edmonton Chinatown gate project: Community association pulls out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Chinese community association previously working with the City of Edmonton on a replacement for the Harbin Gate in Chinatown has withdrawn from the project.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA) claims its \u201cinput has been sidelined as the project\u2019s scope and cost expanded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe city\u2019s approval of an $8.7 million design, at a time when Chinatown face serious economic and social pressures, demonstrates a troubling misalignment with community priorities,\u201d the CBA wrote in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CBA cannot support a project where cultural partners are treated as symbolic rather than substantive contributors, nor can we endorse spending substantial taxpayer dollars for a single, over-budget capital item while urgent needs in Chinatown, including safety, business recovery, and sanitation remain unmet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe these funds would deliver greater public benefit if invested in initiatives that directly support residents and local businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/edmonton.citynews.ca\/2026\/01\/07\/future-of-edmontons-harbin-gate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Future of Edmonton\u2019s Harbin Gate<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The original Harbin Gate, gifted to Edmonton in 1987, was removed in 2017 for LRT construction.
