{"id":728207,"date":"2026-06-10T20:14:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T20:14:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/728207\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T20:14:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T20:14:09","slug":"f1-agrees-to-change-controversial-engine-rules-for-2027-and-2028","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/728207\/","title":{"rendered":"F1 agrees to change controversial engine rules for 2027 and 2028"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Formula 1 will adjust its engine rules in 2027 and 2028 by reducing the amount of electric power available in order to promote flat-out driving.<\/p>\n<p>For 2026, F1 introduced an all-new engine that provided a near 50\/50 split between combustion and electric power, as well as using fully sustainable fuels.<\/p>\n<p>But the new engines have been at the core of criticism from drivers about the new style of driving and racing, placing a particular emphasis on qualifying laps.<\/p>\n<p>The energy-starved nature of the new engines forced drivers to place a lot of focus on when to recharge and use the battery on their cars, with the issue being particularly noticeable in qualifying when hot laps were no longer flat out.<\/p>\n<p>Max Verstappen, the four-time F1 world champion, called the new rules \u201canti-racing\u201d and \u201clike Formula E on steroids,\u201d while Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso said F1 had become a \u201cbattery world championship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Talks have been ongoing in recent weeks about changing the near 50\/50 energy split on the engines, including the F1 organisation, the 11 teams and the engine manufacturers, paving the way for an agreement to be announced by the FIA on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>In 2027, the power of the internal combustion engine will increase by 20kW to 420kW, while the electric power from the battery will fall by 50kW.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of energy harvesting will also increase, taking the engines from a 53\/47 split to 58\/42, per the FIA\u2019s data.<\/p>\n<p>A second step will follow in 2028 when the internal combustion engine power will increase again to 450kW, leaving F1 with a 60\/40 split.<\/p>\n<p>This was the solution many in the paddock had been pushing for, only for opposition to emerge in recent weeks from Ferrari and Audi.<br \/>Audi CEO Gernot D\u00f6llner told reporters in Monaco last weekend that Audi wanted to retain the existing split for 2027, due to the costs involved and operational adjustments required.<\/p>\n<p>But many within the paddock have been open to making changes to the new engine formula that debuted this year for the good of the sport, emphasising the importance of a return to flat-out laps in qualifying especially.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposed changes are intended to address issues related to energy management and fuel energy flow characteristics and make qualifying more flat-out while not impacting the positive and exciting racing generated by the new regulations,\u201d read a statement from the FIA.<\/p>\n<p>It added that \u201csupporting measures relating to power unit supply conditions, race operations and the relevant financial regulations are also included.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Formula 1 will adjust its engine rules in 2027 and 2028 by reducing the amount of electric power&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":728208,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[441],"tags":[49,48,578,576,577,82],"class_list":["post-728207","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-formula-1","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-f1","tag-formula-1","tag-formula1","tag-sports"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/728207","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=728207"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/728207\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/728208"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=728207"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=728207"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=728207"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
