National Park with tips on finding parking lots with space and where they can park along the roadside.

“We had incredible summer weather last year and if it holds the same this year, you can expect that there will be lots and lots of visitors,” said Lesley Quinn, the compliance team lead at P.E.I. National Park.

She suggests using the online parking tool ParksNow, which will be updated with real-time information on parking availability starting in July.

Lesley Quinn, compliance team lead at P.E.I. National Park, says she expects it’s going to be a busy summer at the park with the Canada Strong Pass being renewed for a second year. (Shane Hennessey/CBC)

As for roadside parking, the campaign will provide guidance on where to park and how to do so safely for both visitors and the environment.

“If it looks like a dune, if it looks like something you would want to protect, please don’t park on it,” Quinn said.

“But if you see other vehicles pulling off on the side of the road, follow suit. Make sure both your tires are past that white line and then exit your vehicle very carefully.”

Guests can then use trails that run parallel to the road to get back to beach access points.

“If you’re visiting the park, chances are you’re going to hit your 10,000 steps this summer,” Quinn said.

Doug Campbell, a warden with Parks Canada, says drivers should take it slow on their way through P.E.I. National Park this summer. (Shane Hennessey/CBC)

In a social media post last week, Parks Canada also reminded drivers to slow down, adding that park wardens and RCMP enforce speed limits in the park.

“The highest speed zone in P.E.I. National Park is 60 kilometers an hour. And in many areas, it’s 50 and even 40, especially in areas where there are walkways to get to campgrounds or accesses to the beach from parking areas,” said park warden Doug Campbell.

“We just recommend that when you get in the park, just kind of ease in, enjoy your ride, maybe put the car on cruise control, just take in the view.”

The federal government’s Canada Strong Pass is returning for its second year.
