ESA last year named three astronauts who were due to eventually travel to the lunar gateway as part of the Artemis program, before NASA this year decided to scrap the outpost to fly directly to the Moon\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to really start again to see what we can achieve in terms of astronaut flights, especially to the lunar surface,\u201d Aschbacher told reporters at the ILA Berlin air show. \u201cThis is, of course, my goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aschbacher, who just returned from Houston where he visited NASA for the Artemis III announcement, said \u201cconstructive meetings\u201d were underway but nothing is settled yet. \u201cWe hope that before the end of the year we get some more clarity,\u201d he said, noting that ESA members planned an inter-ministerial meeting to discuss the path forward for space exploration.<\/p>\n<p>        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1781194149_695_robert_wall_aviation_week_network.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"b-lazy  img author__image \"\/><\/p>\n<p>          <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationweek.com\/author\/robert-wall\" class=\"author--teaser__name\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Wall<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"author--teaser__bio\">Robert Wall is Executive Editor for Defense and Space.
