{"id":7302,"date":"2025-07-19T05:19:07","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T05:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/7302\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T05:19:07","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T05:19:07","slug":"multiple-great-white-sharks-spotted-near-popular-beach-where-deadly-attack-occurred-5-years-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/7302\/","title":{"rendered":"Multiple great white sharks spotted near popular beach where deadly attack occurred 5 years ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0New England summer hot spot\u00a0that was the site of the state\u2019s first fatal shark attack five years ago is once again seeing signs of the apex predator as thousands flock to the beach to enjoy the water.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Authorities are warning the public to remain vigilant after two great white sharks were spotted off the coast of Maine\u2019s Bailey Island within 48 hours, the Harpswell Marine Resources and Harbor Management said in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcboston.com\/news\/local\/maine-town-site-of-the-states-first-fatal-shark-attack-issues-warning-after-multiple-sightings\/3768583\/?amp=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a Facebook post<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response to the sightings, officials have posted shark notification flags throughout Cedar Beach, the post said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Visitors who observe a shark are asked to take a picture and contact the Cumberland Regional Communication Center to help officials \u201ctake appropriate action at the time of the sightings.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The beach\u00a0remains open to swimmers, and officials have launched a notification system to keep visitors safely informed in the event a shark is spotted nearby.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Maine\u2019s Bailey Island, a summer hot spot in Maine, is seeing signs of Sharks in the waters once again. Portland Press Herald via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The sightings come five years after the same island was the scene of the Pine Tree State\u2019s first documented fatal shark attack.<\/p>\n<p>A woman was killed by an\u00a0unprovoked shark\u00a0while swimming off the shore of Bailey Island in July 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A witness initially saw the woman in the water when she was injured in an <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/07\/30\/woman-killed-in-maine-shark-attack-loved-volunteering-running-marathons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">apparent shark attack<\/a>, Maine Marine Patrol previously said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The New England waters saw a fatal shark attack occur in 2020. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Two kayakers managed to reach the injured woman and brought her to shore, where first responders attempted to save her life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The woman died, Marine Patrol said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last year, 71 shark bites were recorded throughout the United States,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu\/science\/unprovoked-shark-bites-plummeted-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">according to<\/a>\u00a0the Florida Museum of Natural History\u2019s International Shark Attack File.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Facebook post from the Harpswell Marine Resources and Harbor Management said authorities have already warned the public of two great white sharks spotted in the water.
