{"id":730551,"date":"2026-06-11T21:10:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T21:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/730551\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T21:10:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T21:10:08","slug":"new-deep-diamond-and-barium-minerals-named-after-ubc-researchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/730551\/","title":{"rendered":"New deep diamond and barium minerals named after UBC researchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text-lead text-ubc-blue-sea\">Two <a href=\"https:\/\/ejm.copernicus.org\/articles\/38\/117\/2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">newly discovered minerals<\/a> have a very personal connection to UBC: they were discovered by, and named after, UBC researchers and alumni.<\/p>\n<p>A legacy in rocks<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lee Groat, professor in the department of earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences (EOAS), and alumna Mary Macquistan found raudseppite in barium-rich rocks in the Yukon by accident when examining samples under a microscope. They named the new mineral after late colleague Dr. Mati Raudsepp, who ran the Electron Microbeam lab. \u201cHe was quite a character\u2014we all have Mati stories,\u201d said Dr. Groat, who also has a mineral, groatite, named after him.<\/p>\n<p>Kopylovite was discovered locked inside a \u2018deep diamond\u2019 formed about 150 kilometres beneath the Earth\u2019s surface by alumnus Dr. Nester Korolev. He named the mineral after his former supervisor and EOAS professor, Dr. Maya Kopylova, and her father, Gerzen Kopylov. \u201cI wanted it to be a family mineral,\u201d said Dr. Kopylova. \u201cMy father was a role model for me\u2014a physicist and poet who opposed the totalitarian regime of the Soviet Union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A rare find<\/p>\n<p>About 100 minerals are discovered annually, with only 6,200 in existence, and modern minerals are often smaller than a grain of dust. Scientists have to show a unique chemistry and atomic structure to confirm and name a new mineral.
