As the NFL<\/a> pursues higher broadcast fees, Fox\u2019s public criticism of the league\u2019s streaming strategy could cost the network its longtime NFL package.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Pro Football Talk\u2019s Mike Florio<\/a> published a report about the U.S. House of Representatives holding a hearing on the league\u2019s antitrust status, focusing on NFL broadcast deals that have included contracts with major streaming services such as Amazon and Netflix.<\/p>\n

The deals have fundamentally reshaped how the league monetizes its content, forcing traditional broadcasters to compete with deep-pocketed tech companies.<\/p>\n

Fox faces the prospect of either paying significantly more to broadcast games or losing the package if a new agreement isn\u2019t reached before 2029, leading to Fox\u2019s founder, Rupert Murdoch<\/a>, to attempt to pressure the league.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps not coincidentally, Murdoch employee Clay Travis <\/a>testified at the hearing \u2014 and he pulled no punches about the impact of the NFL\u2019s embrace of streaming on football fans,\u201d Florio wrote. \u201cAlthough most of what he said is accurate, none of it will mend fences between the NFL and Fox. And that could further jeopardize Fox\u2019s ability to retain an NFL package after 2029.\u201d<\/p>\n

Florio then pondered what the media landscape would look like if Fox, which has broadcast NFL games since 1994, lost its package \u2014 a development that would drastically reshape the broadcasting landscape.”<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s still possible that Fox will end up without a package by 2030,\u201d Florio said. \u201cBut where would it go? Unless NBC or ABC take over, there would be no broadcast partner for Sunday afternoon games. Maybe that\u2019s how it eventually goes. Fox exits.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNBC or ABC takes the traditional NFC package (which is no longer strictly tied to NFC games), and NBC or ABC assumes Monday Night Football,\u201d Florio continued. \u201cPrime Video adds Sunday night games. That would leave the Thursday night window. Would Prime Video keep it? Would Netflix want it?\u201d<\/p>\n
