Another key Alberta health leader is out more than two years after the provincial government launched its health system overhaul, sparking fresh frustrations and worries among frontline staff.<\/p>\n
A memo, obtained by CBC News, said Dr. Peter Jamieson was “leaving his role” as Alberta Health Services’ chief medical officer and vice-president on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

“It’s just pure chaos,\u201d said Dr. Paul Parks,\u00a0 president-elect of the Alberta Medical Association’s emergency medicine section.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“This is truly a massive blow for clinical sanity in our system right now. We are really struggling. The frontlines are really struggling \u2014 our emerg wait times, the system overcrowding, access into our hospitals \u2014 it is terrible.”<\/p>\n
According to Parks, there is a sense among nurses and doctors that there a lack of leadership within AHS, which has been relegated to the role of hospital provider under Acute Care Alberta\u00a0 through the restructuring process.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have no idea who is running this health care system now,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re totally rudderless.\u201d<\/p>\n

AHS did not answer questions from CBC News about the nature of Jamieson\u2019s departure or whether he was let go.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is totally demoralizing to see good clinician leads that are respected, that understand how the system works, getting replaced again and again and again,\u201d said Parks.<\/p>\n
An interim leader is not yet in place.<\/p>\n
“It obviously wasn’t a planned transition, as it doesn’t appear they had any other person ready to step in,” said Dr. Braden Manns, a former interim vice-president with AHS<\/p>\n
“As often happens, it seems like this may have been a reactive decision.”<\/p>\n
According to Manns, the chief medical officer at AHS plays an important role. He calls the news disappointing.<\/p>\n
“We know that health systems with consistent, strong leadership have better integration, they have better outcomes, they have lower costs,” said Manns,\u00a0a professor of medicine and health economics at the University of Calgary. <\/p>\n
“And systems where there’s constant transition and constant chaos and lack of support for leaders below you in the system, that is not good for patient care.”<\/p>\n
He’s worried that key work will stall.<\/p>\n
“The focus on improving patient care, the focus on making sure physicians aren’t burned out … It’s going to slow down a lot of progress in Alberta Health Services and the health system more broadly,” said Manns.<\/p>\n
Neither the Ministry of Hospital and Surgical Health Services nor Acute Care Alberta would answer questions about the departure or the concerns it has sparked.<\/p>\n
In a statement, AHS said Jamieson continues to work as a physician within the organization and it will announce coverage plans for the role shortly.<\/p>\n
