Abbotsford continues sharp decline in rental prices<\/p>\n

In both Abbotsford and the province as a whole, rental prices have continued to get cheaper, with May marking the lowest prices in more than a year.<\/p>\n
Locally, the average asking price dropped to $1,739, which is two per cent less than the previous month and 10 per cent less than the same time last year.<\/p>\n
Having such a drastic annual decline in prices gives Abbotsford the second-biggest reduction in the province, only being surpassed by Burnaby, and the eighth-biggest in the entire country.<\/p>\n
The province is seeing a similar trend in rental prices, going from $2,363 in April to $2,355 in May.<\/p>\n
This brings the provincial average to the lowest point in more than a year and a half and is a 5.7 per cent year-over-year reduction.<\/p>\n
The only province to see an even bigger annual change in price was Ontario, which dropped by six per cent.<\/p>\n
Housing and Municipal Affairs Minister Christine Boyle said this massive change in B.C. rental prices is largely the result of the government pushing for more housing options than ever before.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue to see the effects of our efforts to build a historic amount of affordable housing,\u201d said Boyle.<\/p>\n
\u201cSince 2017, through provincial investment and key policy decisions, more new rental and affordable homes are opening in communities throughout B.C. than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite this positive momentum for renters, the list of the most expensive rental communities in Canada is still heavily populated by B.C. cities.<\/p>\n
North Vancouver remains at the top of the list with an average price of $2,898, and half of the entire top-ten list belongs to B.C.<\/p>\n
Boyle said this is a sign that far more work needs to be done in order to rid the province of its longstanding title of being the most expensive place to live in Canada.<\/p>\n
\u201cRents are falling in B.C., but the dream of affording rent or owning a home in a community you love still remains out of reach for many British Columbians,\u201d said Boyle.<\/p>\n
