There’s a colorful new sculpture in Union Square, and it’s sure to trigger core childhood memories.<\/p>\n

Union Square Partnership, in collaboration with the Fashion Institute of Technology and design collective Scale Rule, has officially unveiled “Bead Maze,” a monumental, interactive public sculpture inspired by the classic bead maze toys found in every pediatrician\u2019s waiting room since the dawn of time.<\/p>\n

Conceptualized by seven seniors from FIT\u2019s Fine Arts program, this oversized nostalgia trip is a massive 26.5-foot by 13-foot playground of looping, bending steel pipes. And it’s not just something pretty to look at\u2014go full toddler as you walk through the structure and slide giant plywood beads along the tracks. There’s even a signature acrylic bead perched 12 feet in the air like a glowing beacon, a reminder of long-forgotten toys.<\/p>\n

With fabrication by Brooklyn\u2019s A05 Studio and engineering muscle from world-renowned architectural firms Grimshaw and sbp, the sculpture is as sturdy as it is whimsical. The twisting pipes are a clever nod to the winding subway lines running right beneath your feet, while the vibrant color palette is lifted straight from the bustling Union Square Greenmarket nearby.<\/p>\n

Supported by philanthropist Bob Fisch and the NYC DOT Art Program, the project marks a major milestone for FIT\u2019s School of Art and Design, giving emerging student artists a massive platform to showcase their talents to hundreds of thousands of daily New Yorkers.<\/p>\n
