A CPS spokesperson told Global News it is protocol for the flags to be lowered to half-mast to honour the service and sacrifice of any Canadian police officer who died in the line of duty.<\/p>\n

Early Thursday morning, Const. Marc Pinizzotto, a member of the Toronto police department\u2019s Emergency Task Force, was shot and killed while officers were executing a search warrant in the neighbourhood of North York.<\/p>\n

Both the Edmonton and Calgary police forces are no strangers to such tragedies.<\/p>\n

A total of 12 Calgary police officers<\/a> and 10 members of the Edmonton Police Service<\/a> have also been killed in the line of duty during the history of the respective forces.<\/p>\n
