All of the participants had already been through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a60094208\/heres-how-breast-cancer-treatments-have-changed-for-the-better\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a60094208\/heres-how-breast-cancer-treatments-have-changed-for-the-better\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"chemotherapy\" data-node-id=\"9.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">chemotherapy<\/a> for metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (mPDAC), and they were all required to be able to carry out most of their usual activities.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">After about 8.5 months, the group that was randomly assigned to receive daraxonrasib had an overall survival rate of about 13.2 months, while the group that received chemotherapy had a survival rate of about 6.6 to 6.7 months, depending on the type of tumor the participant had. That means the survival time was nearly doubled with daraxonrasib compared to chemo.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The patients who received daraxonrasib also had a lower incidence of serious side effects than those who went through chemotherapy\u2014which makes a big difference when it comes to quality of life. Forty-four percent of patients in the daraxonrasib group experienced those more intense side effects while 57.5 percent of the chemotherapy group did. Based on side effects, only 1.2 percent of people in the daraxonrasib group stopped their treatment, compared to 11.2 percent of those in the chemotherapy group.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s new about this drug?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Daraxonrasib is an experimental medication, meaning it is new and not yet approved. But the results of this study are being submitted to the FDA to support its approval, and more trials are already underway.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">As for what makes this med so special\u2014aside from its effectiveness\u2014it\u2019s an oral pill that is much more targeted than chemo and functions entirely differently. \u201cIt has a very novel mechanism of action,\u201d Dr. Laguna says. Daraxonrasib targets the KRAS protein, turning it off and stopping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a65958520\/cancer-symptoms\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a65958520\/cancer-symptoms\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cancer\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cancer<\/a> growth\u2014whether or not a patient has a mutation in that protein.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">That said, \u201cthe vast majority of pancreatic cancers are driven by a KRAS mutation,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/doctors.umiamihealth.org\/provider\/peter-joel-hosein\/525839\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/doctors.umiamihealth.org\/provider\/peter-joel-hosein\/525839\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Peter Hosein, MD\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Peter Hosein, MD<\/a>, associate director for clinical research with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/umiamihealth.org\/en\/sylvester-comprehensive-cancer-center\/treatments-and-services\/pancreatic-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/umiamihealth.org\/en\/sylvester-comprehensive-cancer-center\/treatments-and-services\/pancreatic-cancer\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Pancreatic Cancer Research Institute\" data-node-id=\"15.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pancreatic Cancer Research Institute<\/a>. We\u2019re talking more than 90 percent of cases.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">There are other drugs approved to target a KRAS subtype called G12C, but that\u2019s just one subtype, Dr. Hosein says, and it\u2019s less common. \u201cDaraxonrasib can inhibit any subtype of KRAS and is the first drug in this class of \u2018panRAS\u2019 inhibitors to show success in a large phase 3 study,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>While the drug is effective, it\u2019s still not a cure.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Pancreatic cancer has one of the lowest survival rates of all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a65614815\/cancer-rates-young-people-prevention\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a65614815\/cancer-rates-young-people-prevention\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cancers\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cancers<\/a>, per <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/cancer-survival-rate\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/cancer-survival-rate\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Cleveland Clinic\" data-node-id=\"18.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>. One of the biggest reasons is that pancreatic cancer is often caught during later stages. \u201cUnfortunately, we don\u2019t have tools to make an early diagnosis,\u201d says Dr. Laguna. \u201cMost of our patients will be diagnosed with very advanced metastatic disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">That means these patients can\u2019t be cured, even with daraxonrasib. \u201cEven though daraxonrasib has been shown to help people live longer, it is not a cure,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dana-farber.org\/find-a-doctor\/brandon-huffman\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.dana-farber.org\/find-a-doctor\/brandon-huffman\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Brandon Huffman, MD\" data-node-id=\"19.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brandon Huffman, MD<\/a>, a medical oncologist in the gastrointestinal cancer center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. \u201cEventually, pancreatic cancers will become resistant to the therapy, and lives will be shortened as a consequence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Dr. Huffman calls daraxonrasib \u201ca really critical and promising first step establishing that we can block the main driver of growth in this cancer,\u201d but says there\u2019s still a long way to go before the disease can be cured.<\/p>\n<p>How can people with pancreatic cancer get daraxonrasib?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">While the medication is still not approved by the FDA, Revolution Medicines (which makes daraxonrasib) has created an expanded access program to make the drug accessible to patients who are eligible. \u201cAny oncologist in the US can apply for their patient to get on that expanded access program,\u201d Dr. Pant says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">So, if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and you\u2019re interested in taking daraxonrasib, talk to your oncologist.
