\n\tSteven Spielberg\u2019s sci-fi thriller \u201cDisclosure Day<\/a>\u201d made first contact with theaters on Friday and landed at No. 1 on the domestic box office charts.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDisclosure Day\u201d made $19 million on opening day from 3,824 North American theaters and is expected to gross $44 million by the end of the weekend. Universal spent $115 million on the sci-fi thriller, meaning it will need to stick around in theaters for weeks to reach profitability. Luckily for the studio, Spielberg has a solid track record of opening down the middle with blockbusters and legging out to excellent final tallies. 2005\u2019s \u201cWar of the Worlds\u201d opened to $64 million domestic against a $132 million budget, and ended its run with $603 million worldwide. More recently, \u201cReady Player One\u201d opened in 2018 to $41 million domestic against a $175 million budget, and went on to gross $607 million worldwide. <\/p>\n

\n\tEmily Blunt stars in \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d as meteorologist Margaret Fairchild, who becomes tangled in a plot to expose a mass government cover-up of extraterrestrial life. Other cast members include Josh O\u2019Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo and Wyatt Russell.<\/p>\n

\n\tMiraculously, Focus Features\u2019 \u201cObsession<\/a>\u201d shot back up to second place in its fifth Friday in theaters, adding $6.2 million. By Sunday, the indie horror is expected to make another $21 million, pushing its domestic earnings to an astounding $190 million. \u201cObsession,\u201d directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, cost around $1 million to produce, making it one of the most profitable films in recent memory. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cScary Movie<\/a>\u201d took third with $4.8 million domestically as it entered its second weekend in North American theaters. By Sunday, it should collect $14.6 million (a 73% drop from its opening), pushing the parody film\u2019s domestic haul to $84.69 million. Miramax only spent $30 million on \u201cScary Movie,\u201d meaning it\u2019s already a hit for the studio.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cScary Movie\u201d sees the return of franchise masterminds the Wayans Brothers, who have been absent from the series since 2001\u2019s \u201cScary Movie 2.\u201d Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. star while Craig Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans co-wrote the script with Rick Alvarez. Anna Faris and Regina Hall also reprise their original \u201cScary Movie\u201d roles as Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks.<\/p>\n

\n\tFourth place on Friday went to A24\u2019s \u201cBackrooms,\u201d which earned an estimated $3.6 million domestic on its third Friday in cinemas. By the end of the weekend, rivals project the horror film will add $12 million, pushing its North American total to about $160 million. Directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, who first debuted his liminal horror concept on YouTube, \u201cBackrooms\u201d cost around $10 million to produce. <\/p>\n

\n\tFinally, in fifth place was Amazon MGM\u2019s \u201cMasters of the Universe,\u201d which plummeted to $2.4 million on its second Friday of release. By Sunday, it\u2019s expected to gross $9.2 million, which represents a 69% drop from its debut.
