St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> manager Oli Marmol was ejected during the eighth inning after a wild ABS challenge argument turned worse real quick.<\/p>\n

Cardinals reliever Chris Roycroft was pitching a full-count to Minnesota Twins<\/a> lead-off hitter Austin Martin. His just outside fastball pitch was considered inside the zone by the home-plate umpire, leading to a strikeout. It seemed like the Twins slugger was heading back to the dugout, but within a few steps, he signaled for an ABS challenge. It was successful.<\/p>\n

But Marmol took issue with it. He argued that Martin took too long to ask for the challenge and the umpire should not have allowed for the replay. However, the home plate umpire didn’t waste much time, tossing the Cardinals manager out of the game.<\/p>\n

Marmol walked towards the umpire and had a heated conversation to make his point before walking away in disgust.<\/p>\n

The ejection this morning over the ABS challenge call timing feels strange, but could be the first of many that could come in near future, especially postseason.<\/p>\n

Cardinals’ Oli Marmol ejected but did he have a point?<\/p>\n

From this season, MLB has introduced the ABS challenge system, allowing pitchers, batters, and catchers to question the call of home-plate umpires and get it overturned if they are right. The signal for the same is a quick tap to one’s helmet\/cap. No assistance from the dugout is allowed.<\/p>\n

In this instance, upon a closer look, it doesn’t seem that Martin got any hint from the dugout. But the camera could also have missed the culprit. Anyhow, the point of Marmol was that the Twins star was too late with his reaction to go for the review.<\/p>\n

The official rule says\u00a0the individual has to decide within two seconds. However, it’s up to the home-plate umpire when those two seconds start exactly, leaving room for confusion.<\/p>\n

So, Marmol had a point, but he was shut down real quick.<\/p>\n
