CAMBRIDGE – The 2025 season was an anomaly for the Weston boys tennis program.

After having won seven consecutive state championships, the Wildcats lost in the title match to Bedford, 4-1. With another chance, Weston returned to the mountaintop and beat rival Wayland 3-2 to claim the Div. 3 title.

“We got beat pretty badly in the finals last year so that gave us inspiration to go back to work,” head coach George Conlin said. “The three seniors that are graduating have been in the state championship all four years of their high school careers. There is not a lot of people who can say that, that’s pretty special.”

Peter Chan, Winston Starrett and first doubles were the teams who claimed the victories for the Wildcats, with Starrett’s clinching the title. He said the moment was well worth the wait.

“It’s indescribable,” Starrett said. “It’s like a culmination of your four years of hard work. I feel like, to be a senior on these courts and winning here in my last match ever as a high school player, it just feels so great.”

Starrett said that he thought of classes past when he held the trophy and the influence they had on him.

“The seniors when I was a freshman, I looked up to them so much,” Starrett said. “It feels so surreal to be that person that is kind of there as everyone’s rock and being the one to lead the team. It feels like it has come full circle.”

On the girls side, Martha’s Vineyard and Dover-Sherborn battled to a 2-2 tie through second and third singles and first and second doubles. This put all the money on the first singles matchup between MV’s Laina Dubin and D-S’s Leah Hills.

Dubin took the opening set 6-2 but Hills got her in the second set to force a decisive third set. Dubin knew the situation, as she had been following her teammates scores.

“I knew the situation the whole time,” Dubin said. “I was watching everyone’s scores in between points, just to know what the stakes for me were.

Dubin and Hills battled to a 2-2 tie, but both looked composed and in control. Dubin said this was not how she felt in her head.

“I felt in my head like I kind of did (lose composure),” Dubin said. “I just kind of try to forget what I am doing and keep playing how I am playing.”

The Vineyard star finally broke away, eventually claiming a 6-3 victory and sending her team back on the ferry with smiles on their faces.

“We just have so much fun in practice,” Dubin said. “We work well together and can rely on each other every time.”

CAMBRIDGE – The 2025 season was an anomaly for the Weston boys tennis program.
