{"id":73739,"date":"2025-08-16T09:01:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T09:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/73739\/"},"modified":"2025-08-16T09:01:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T09:01:10","slug":"wild-pigs-turn-neon-blue-in-california-triggering-warnings-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/73739\/","title":{"rendered":"Wild Pigs Turn &#8216;Neon Blue&#8217; in California, Triggering Warnings : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Game hunters have found startlingly &#8216;neon blue&#8217; flesh inside of wild pigs in California, triggering advisory statements on potential contamination.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not talking about a little blue,&#8221; Dan Burton, owner of a wildlife control company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-08-05\/exposure-to-rat-poison-turns-meat-of-wild-pigs-blue-authorities-in-monterey-county-warn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> Salvador Hernandez at The Los Angeles Times. &#8220;I&#8217;m talking about neon blue, blueberry blue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An investigation by local authorities found the dramatic color change was caused by rodenticide poisoning and has <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.ca.gov\/News\/Archive\/poison-detection-in-wild-pigs-brings-attention-to-pesticide-exposure-in-hunter-harvested-wildlife\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">issued a warning<\/a> across the Monterey County area. This poison is often sold dyed for identification, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdpr.ca.gov\/cac-letter\/diphacinone-restricted-material-status-prohibitions-allowed-uses-and-questions-and-answers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its use has been highly restricted<\/a> in California since 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/researchers-propose-harnessing-the-stench-of-predatory-insects-as-a-pesticide-alternative\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We Can Make Powerful Nature-Inspired &#8216;Pesticides&#8217; Without Poison, Scientists Say<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hunters should be aware that the meat of game animals, such as wild pig, deer, bear, and geese, might be contaminated if that game animal has been exposed to rodenticides,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.ca.gov\/News\/Archive\/poison-detection-in-wild-pigs-brings-attention-to-pesticide-exposure-in-hunter-harvested-wildlife\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> pesticide investigations coordinator Ryan Bourbour from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rodenticide exposure can be a concern for non-target wildlife in areas where applications occur in close proximity to wildlife habitat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/BlueDyedRodenticideBait-e1754899591347.jpg\" alt=\"Blue dyed bait poisoned with rodenticide\" width=\"642\" height=\"461\" class=\"wp-image-170925 size-full\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Rodenticide bait. (CDFW)<\/p>\n<p>Concerningly, this isn&#8217;t the first time wild pigs in the region <a href=\"https:\/\/imgur.com\/gallery\/weird-pig-YTIx8\" style=\"--tw-scale-x: 1; --tw-scale-y: 1; --tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; --tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; --tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; --tw-ring-color: #3b82f680; --tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; letter-spacing: -0.45px;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have had their innards tainted blue<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>A popular rodent control in agriculture, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diphenadione\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diphacinone<\/a> is a first generation rodenticide that acts an anticoagulant, causing severe internal bleeding. <\/p>\n<p>Predators, including humans, who eat an animal poisoned with the toxin can become ill themselves; while the chemical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apvma.gov.au\/resources\/frequently-searched-chemicals\/rodenticides\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">breaks down faster<\/a> than second generation rodenticides, diphacinone remains active in the dead animals tissues for some time, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.fct.2011.05.014\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">even if cooked<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/BlueInsidesWildPig2015.jpeg\" alt=\"Black wild pig with skin pushed aside showing bright blue flesh.\" width=\"2448\" height=\"1836\" class=\"wp-image-170926 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Another wild pig with blue innards discovered in 2015. (<a href=\"https:\/\/imgur.com\/gallery\/weird-pig-YTIx8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GlendilTEK\/imgur<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audubon.org\/magazine\/poisons-used-kill-rodents-have-safer-alternatives\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wildlife groups<\/a> globally have long been urging us to stop relying on chemical pesticides because of the collateral damage these poisons inflict. From <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.scitotenv.2022.153024\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">owls<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/study-finds-family-of-pesticides-implicated-in-honeybee-deaths-also-hurt-ground-bees\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bees<\/a>, pesticides are causing great harm to wildlife. <\/p>\n<p>Non-target animals either consume it directly or are impacted by secondary exposure when eating other animals that have ingested the poison, adding further strain on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/apr\/07\/endangered-species-protection-animals-plants-pesticides-epa-insecticides\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">already endangered species<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Wild pigs, hybrids between domestic pigs and wild boars, are omnivores that would eat both the poisoned rodents and the bait.<\/p>\n<p>Pesticides are harmful to exposed humans as well.
