But look closer, and you will see a series of hidden details that make this one of the mission&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/10-iconic-photos-that-define-the-artemis-ii-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/10-iconic-photos-that-define-the-artemis-ii-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/10-iconic-photos-that-define-the-artemis-ii-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most unique and poignant images<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">When Wiseman took this photograph (with a Nikon D5 camera), he and his <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/farthest-fastest-and-most-diverse-6-major-records-the-artemis-ii-astronauts-will-smash-as-nasa-returns-to-the-moon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/farthest-fastest-and-most-diverse-6-major-records-the-artemis-ii-astronauts-will-smash-as-nasa-returns-to-the-moon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/farthest-fastest-and-most-diverse-6-major-records-the-artemis-ii-astronauts-will-smash-as-nasa-returns-to-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record-breaking crew<\/a> were on the night side of Earth. Yet it looks very much like daytime, because the globe was lit by bright light from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-moon\/how-to-catch-the-full-pink-moon-in-april-followed-by-a-blue-moon-in-may\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-moon\/how-to-catch-the-full-pink-moon-in-april-followed-by-a-blue-moon-in-may\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-moon\/how-to-catch-the-full-pink-moon-in-april-followed-by-a-blue-moon-in-may\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pink Moon<\/a>, which had turned full on April 1 \u2014 the day before Artemis II<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/live\/artemis-ii-launch-wednesday-april-1\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/live\/artemis-ii-launch-wednesday-april-1\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/live\/artemis-ii-launch-wednesday-april-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> launched<\/a> from Florida&#8217;s Kennedy Space Center.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-18c4e54c-10de-42b0-abdd-d6c2ef9c653c-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">What Wiseman&#8217;s camera captured was sunlight reflected by the moon onto Earth, a subtle light he could only capture by maximizing his camera&#8217;s sensitivity. Look at the originals, archived on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eol.jsc.nasa.gov\/SearchPhotos\/photo.pl?mission=ART002&amp;roll=E&amp;frame=25492\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/eol.jsc.nasa.gov\/SearchPhotos\/photo.pl?mission=ART002&amp;roll=E&amp;frame=25492\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth<\/a>, and you can see what this view looked like to the naked eye.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-87ae39d8-acf8-4230-888b-679807386a3a\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Being illuminated largely by moonlight allowed nighttime features to stand out in unusual detail. Look carefully, and you\u2019ll see city lights. From the astronauts&#8217; position above the mid-Atlantic, urban lights can be seen in parts of Spain, Portugal, northern Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">But it\u2019s not just the cities that are aglow. Because this global image includes both the North and South Poles, Wiseman managed to capture an extremely rare display of simultaneous auroras on opposite sides of the Earth. Look at the top left and bottom right segments of the planet, and you\u2019ll spot rival bands of green \u2014 the northern and southern lights, generated as charged particles of solar wind race along magnetic field lines and collide with molecules in Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">You can also see a sliver of sunlight shining through Earth&#8217;s atmosphere on the bottom-right limb of our planet; evidence that it\u2019s one day past full moon. It\u2019s sometimes called \u201cfalse dawn\u201d and \u201cfalse dusk\u201d when it\u2019s seen near the horizon in very dark locations on Earth (typically during twilight close to the equinoxes).
