Arham Paul was walking home from school when he found out two of the songs he produced would appear on Drake\u2019s new albums.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got a call from the guy I made the beat with\u2026. When I found out I was 100 per cent on the album, I was [going] crazy,\u201d said Arham, a 16-year-old student from Markham, Ontario.<\/p>\n
The teen producer goes by ap.melodies.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He produced two songs for Drake: Classic, which appeared on the album Habibti, and Q&A, featured on the album Maid of Honour.<\/p>\n
Both albums dropped alongside Iceman on May 15.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Arham started producing at a young age. He was influenced by his dad, who played multiple instruments.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He then began experimenting with GarageBand, a free music creation app.<\/p>\n
\u201cI started remixing songs from YouTube and that\u2019s how I got into it,\u201d said Arham.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Today, Arham\u2019s process involves layering different sounds and instruments to create a beat that fits the artist he\u2019s making it for.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A single beat can take up to three hours for Arham to make. Even then, there\u2019s no guarantee the artist will use it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How did he end up producing for Drake?<\/p>\n
Arham said he connected with some of Drake\u2019s producers online last summer.<\/p>\n
He said he would continuously message them his beats.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Eventually, one of Drake\u2019s collaborators reached out to Arham because he needed help with a song.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Even though it was a school night, he got to work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had till the end of the night to make [the beat]. We sent it the next day, and then we found out Drake recorded it. That was for Classic,\u201d said Arham.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Arham described Classic as having an \u201980s R&B vibe to it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
For Q&A, he blended genres of Brazilian Funk and R&B.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cDrake hasn\u2019t really hopped on Brazilian funk, at least not Brazilian funk and R&B mixed together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
For Arham, experimenting with different genres is what he thinks makes him stand out as a producer.\u00a0<\/p>\n
You can never be too young to start, says expert<\/p>\n
Dan Brodbeck is a producer and professor at Fanshawe College\u2019s nusic industry arts program in London, Ontario.<\/p>\n
He said Arham\u2019s story is proof that you\u2019re never too young to start making music.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cCreativity is never limited by your age.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Brodbeck has come across several talented young musicians, but he recognizes not everyone has access to opportunities like Arham.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He said Arham\u2019s success is impressive because he took advantage of a rare opportunity.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t just snap your fingers and hope somebody of Drake\u2019s stature can like your music and then think, \u2018I want this person to be involved.\u2019 That\u2019s rare,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He isn\u2019t surprised by Arham\u2019s success, telling CBC Kids News modern technology has made music production more accessible.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Spanu said Arham\u2019s age is actually an advantage because younger producers often bring energy and fresh ideas to their work.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also recognized Arham\u2019s ability to market himself online through social media, which has helped him stand out in a competitive industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s really good at telling the story of himself as a producer,\u201d said Spanu.\u00a0<\/p>\n
What\u2019s next?<\/p>\n
Arham wants to continue working for Drake and collaborate with some of his favourite artists, like rappers Travis Scott and Don Toliver.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to work with some of the biggest artists \u2026 directly in the studio rather than sending beats to their number,\u201d said Arham.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Arham also offered advice to young producers trying to break into the industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTry to be the best version of yourself when making music.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also emphasized building connections with artists and networking because you never know who might need your help making a song.\u00a0<\/p>\n
