Two weeks after\u00a0Backrooms<\/a>\u00a0became a hit, Hollywood\u2019s looking to more YouTube for the next big thing. And that search has led them to Kevin Cate\u2019s\u00a0Open Door.<\/p>\n

Per Variety<\/a>, the short film will became a big-budget movie through a six figure development deal. Leading that charge is executive producers Rick Kearney and Cate\u2019s production company Clinging Vine Films. Cate wrote the film\u2019s spec script with\u00a0Io\u00a0writer Charles Spano, and this\u2019ll be Cate\u2019s second film. (His debut, Unbearable Christmas,\u00a0is a comedy starring Julia Stiles and David Cross, which currently lacks a release date.)<\/p>\n

Open Door\u00a0is about two coworkers who wind up in a stalled elevator, after which things take a turn for the worst. Across YouTube, Instagram, and Tiktok, the three-minute short amassed over 15 million views, and Cate said in a press statement that fans have repeatedly \u201casked me what our characters saw down there. I really, really can\u2019t wait to show everyone \u2014 and give some hints along the way.\u201d He went on to say that he\u2019s \u201cride or die\u201d with the original cast and crew, and the short\u2019s two stars, Sean Anthony Baker and Mia Matthews, will reprise their roles for the full feature.<\/p>\n

Cate also launched a website<\/a> to track the film\u2019s progress. It\u2019s currently in the budgeting phase, and fans can sign up to provide \u201chard proof the world wants this movie.\u201d Future milestones like financing and casting are laid out in the timeline, but Cate\u2019s currently not asking for any money to get the ball rolling. In his ideal world, Cate wants to lock down funding and casting \u201csoon\u201d so he can film\u00a0Open Door\u00a0this year and release it in 2027.<\/p>\n
