The Manitoba government announced Monday that 26 new supported transitional housing units will be available to help women and children escaping gender-based violence, including two developments in downtown Winnipeg.<\/p>\n

The projects include two downtown developments, the first of which is Standing Eagle, an 11-unit transitional housing complex that was completed in January and is now fully occupied.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is another step in our government\u2019s initiative to make safe, affordable housing readily available for Manitobans who need it most,\u201d said Smith. \u201cThese new units represent our government\u2019s commitment to expanding support services, providing safe spaces and ensuring everyone has access to the help they need. This is going to be transformative for women and their families and will help break cycles of violence by providing housing and healing through a trauma-informed lens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials said tenants will pay rent geared to their income, helping ensure housing remains affordable and accessible.<\/p>\n

The second development, Morning Light, is a 15-unit second-stage transitional housing project scheduled for completion by the end of June, with full occupancy anticipated in July. The development includes 10 studio units, three two-bedroom units and two three-bedroom units. Tenancies are expected to range from six to 24 months.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur government is building a Manitoba where survivors of gender-based violence and their families have the tools, resources and supports they need to heal,\u201d said Fontaine. \u201cSupported transitional housing projects like Standing Eagle give women and children a stable place to call home while they build a new path forward to a better future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both buildings will provide affordable housing and on-site supports to help women transition from violence to long-term housing stability.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one leaving violence should have to choose between staying unsafe and having nowhere to go,\u201d said Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham. \u201cThese homes give women and children a safe place to land, with the supports they need to rebuild their lives and move toward long-term stability. Winnipeg is in the middle of the strongest surge in affordable and deeply affordable housing construction we have seen in 50 years, and these projects show why that work matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Manitoba government has allocated $4 million in capital funding for the projects and has committed ongoing funding for rent supplements and support services.<\/p>\n
