Environment Canada has issued a coastal flooding statement for southern Vancouver Island, warning that elevated ocean water levels and strong winds could lead to localized flooding overnight into Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The statement<\/a> covers coastal areas from Clo-oose on the west coast of Vancouver Island to Oak Bay, including the Greater Victoria coastline from Cordova Bay to East Sooke.<\/p>\n

Forecasters say the greatest risk is expected between midnight and 4 a.m. Tuesday when strong westerly winds are forecast to coincide with seasonally high tides.<\/p>\n

\u201cElevated ocean water levels accompanied by strong wind are expected, possibly exceeding highest astronomical tide,\u201d Environment Canada said in the statement.<\/p>\n

The weather agency warns that coastal flooding is possible along exposed west and south-facing shorelines, especially in low-lying areas.<\/p>\n

Coastal flooding comes from a number of factors driving water levels higher than normal, Environment Canada says. Strong winds can push ocean water toward shore, creating a storm surge, while large waves can force additional water inland.<\/p>\n

Residents in affected areas are urged to monitor forecasts and alerts and avoid exposed shorelines during periods of high water and large waves.<\/p>\n
