{"id":741394,"date":"2026-06-16T22:07:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T22:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/741394\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T22:07:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T22:07:11","slug":"tornado-and-downbursts-confirmed-as-damage-reported-in-southern-ontario","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/741394\/","title":{"rendered":"Tornado and downbursts confirmed as damage reported in southern Ontario"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A tree that was uprooted from a tornado in southern Ontario last week.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have confirmed that a tornado struck part of southern Ontario as a line of storms moved through last week.<\/p>\n<p>It happened in the Croton area, north of Chatham in southwestern Ontario, at around 2 a.m. on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDamage to an outbuilding and crops was reported in the Croton area after a storm passed through,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwo.ca\/ntp\/blog\/2026\/tornado_and_downbursts_in_sw_on_on_june_12.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Northern Tornadoes Project said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo injuries were reported. An NTP ground and drone survey was completed on June 12, 2026, documenting the reported damage and discovering additional damage to trees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insauga.com\/thunderstorms-hail-and-strong-winds-possible-in-southern-ontario\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thunderstorms, hail and strong winds possible in southern Ontario<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Researchers said it was an EF0 tornado (on a scale of 0 to 5, with five being the strongest) with an estimated maximum wind speed of 130 km\/h, a track length of 4.8 km, and a maximum path width of 150 m.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-825782\" class=\"wp-image-825782 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/CrotonDoor.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"834\" height=\"659\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-825782\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Damage from the tornado.<\/p>\n<p>Two downbursts, which The Weather Network says are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm, were also confirmed to have occurred in southwestern Ontario the same night.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the tornado occurring, at around 1:35 a.m., one of the downbursts happened in the Walpole Island area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDamage to a cell tower was reported in Walpole after a storm passed through the area.
