{"id":74182,"date":"2025-08-16T13:35:04","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T13:35:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/74182\/"},"modified":"2025-08-16T13:35:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T13:35:04","slug":"flight-attendants-walk-off-the-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/74182\/","title":{"rendered":"Flight attendants walk off the job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Air Canada flight attendants have officially begun their strike after failing to reach a deal with the airline, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The strike officially began at 12:58 a.m. ET. The Air Canada component of CUPE says they will hold picket lines in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Richmond, B.C., Halifax, Winnipeg and Ottawa. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Shortly after strike action began, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aircanada.com\/media\/air-canada-and-air-canada-rouge-action-lockout-of-flight-attendants-in-response-to-cupe-strike\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.aircanada.com\/media\/air-canada-and-air-canada-rouge-action-lockout-of-flight-attendants-in-response-to-cupe-strike\/\">Air Canada initiated a lockout<\/a> that took effect at 1:30 a.m. ET, describing it in a press release Saturday morning as a \u201cnecessary\u201d step in response to the stoppage. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The airline says all operations by Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge are suspended, and that the shutdown of the country\u2019s largest airline impacts approximately 130,000 people each day. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The airline said it will cancel around 500 flights leading up to the strike deadline in anticipation of the work stoppage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Regional Air Canada Express flights operated by Jazz Aviation and PAL airlines are not impacted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIf your flight is cancelled, don\u2019t go to the airport without a confirmed new booking,\u201d Air Canada told customers on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The airline said it will get in touch with the customers by email or text if their flights were cancelled. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Passengers whose flights are impacted will be able to request a full refund on Air Canada\u2019s website or the mobile app, the airline said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">On Aug. 11, the Air Canada Component of CUPE submitted a revised wage proposal to the airline, following around eight months of negotiations with the airline. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to the union, entry-level Air Canada flight attendants\u2019 wages have only increased by 10 per cent ($3 per hour) in the past 25 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Additionally, the union says workers \u201care not paid for a significant portion of their time on the job, including while they perform critical safety checks, attend to onboard medical and safety emergencies, and assist passengers with boarding and deplaning,\u201d according to a press release on Aug. 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/article\/air-canada-flight-attendant-union-must-return-to-the-table-jobs-minister\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/article\/air-canada-flight-attendant-union-must-return-to-the-table-jobs-minister\/\">Polling data published by the union Friday<\/a> shows that 88 per cent of surveyed Canadians \u201cbelieve flight attendants should be paid for all work-related duties,\u201d and 80 per cent supported \u201craising flight attendant pay to meet the rising cost-of-living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">On Wednesday, the union gave the airline a 72-hour strike notice, in which Air Canada responded with a lockout notice that said it would prevent the flight attendants from being able to work Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the union said the proposal from Air Canada was rejected because they preferred to negotiate and arrive at a deal the members could vote on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to Air Canada, the latest offer contained a 38 per cent increase in total compensation, including benefits and pensions over four years.
