{"id":742804,"date":"2026-06-17T13:22:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T13:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/742804\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T13:22:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T13:22:10","slug":"was-life-delivered-to-earth-by-asteroids-with-a-helping-hand-from-jupiter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/742804\/","title":{"rendered":"Was life delivered to Earth by asteroids with a helping hand from Jupiter?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-354d6577-0e5c-40b3-ac9b-072721589e13\">Earth got some of the key ingredients for life from asteroids in the inner solar system \u2013 with a little help from the solar system&#8217;s largest planet, Jupiter, according to a recent study.<\/p>\n<p>To figure out why we\u2019re all here, and whether anyone else might be out there in the universe, scientists have to start with a more basic question: how did Earth get its supply of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/alien-life-not-carbon-based-autocatalysis-common\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/alien-life-not-carbon-based-autocatalysis-common\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/alien-life-not-carbon-based-autocatalysis-common\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chemicals that make up living cells<\/a>? <\/p>\n<p>According to Rice University planetary scientist Rajdeep Dasgupta and his colleagues, Earth\u2019s stockpile of phosphorus and nitrogen, two <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ingredients-for-life-came-from-space-new-study\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ingredients-for-life-came-from-space-new-study\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ingredients-for-life-came-from-space-new-study\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chemical elements essential to life<\/a>, came mostly from chunks of rock that formed in the inner<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> solar system<\/a>. And that process might not have happened without <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter <\/a>looming just outside the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16105-asteroid-belt.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16105-asteroid-belt.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16105-asteroid-belt.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid belt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-17ef2e99-fa53-48ab-831a-b0d636c0286d-0\">&#8220;For our own solar system, Jupiter&#8217;s presence and growth history indeed seem to have played a critical role in determining the distribution of the basic chemical ingredients necessary for habitable worlds,&#8221; said Dasgupta in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/planetary-science\/astrobiology\/nasa-finds-new-way-earth-may-have-received-elements-needed-for-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/planetary-science\/astrobiology\/nasa-finds-new-way-earth-may-have-received-elements-needed-for-life\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA press release<\/a>. &#8220;It remains an open question whether a life-essential elements budget similar to Earth&#8217;s can be estimated without a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/jupiter-planets-common-occurrence-cosmic-neighborhood\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/jupiter-planets-common-occurrence-cosmic-neighborhood\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/jupiter-planets-common-occurrence-cosmic-neighborhood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter-like planet<\/a> in the population.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-f385fcc4-837f-4ad4-b9fe-ab5e5d09ac10\"\/>Jupiter scores an assist<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-3ff457ed-a4b5-43db-af9d-f7baadfd2afd\">Dasgupta and his colleagues combined lab experiments and computer simulations to map the proportions of nitrogen and phosphorus, two chemical elements essential to life, in the early solar system. Life as we know it is literally built on these two elements; you can&#8217;t build amino acids without nitrogen, and you can\u2019t build DNA or RNA without phosphorus.<\/p>\n<p>Other elements are also essential: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur, but how Earth got its phosphorus, in particular, has gotten less attention from researchers so far.<\/p>\n<p>When scientists are investigating how Earth might have received the ingredients for life, one big clue is the ratio of each element to the others. Those proportions can form sort of a chemical fingerprint pointing back to the elements\u2019 original source. In this case, looking at the ratio of phosphorus to nitrogen in present-day Earth\u2019s rocky bulk could shed some light on where Earth\u2019s phosphorus came from.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>In the lab, the researchers simulated how different elements sort into layers as a newly formed asteroid cools, causing molten rock to crystallize. They also used computer simulations to model how different groups of planetesimals, clumps of metal and rock that coalesced out of the swirling disk of dust around the newborn sun, became the seeds of potential planets, formed and moved around the early solar system \u2013 moving phosphorus and nitrogen with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3mYZwhv5a6UjhaoxmoyTAQ.png\" alt=\"All life on Earth needs the same elements: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur (CHNOPS).\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3mYZwhv5a6UjhaoxmoyTAQ.png\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3mYZwhv5a6UjhaoxmoyTAQ.png\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: NASA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-1aea9c29-40ee-4149-8acd-e5ade853a144\">It turns out that present-day Earth contains phosphorus and nitrogen in about the same proportions as rocky planetesimals that formed in the inner solar system, the area between Jupiter and the Sun, around 4.3 to 4.2 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Dasgupta and his colleagues\u2019 models suggest that these chunks of rock, part of our solar system\u2019s second generation of planetesimals, probably brought their shares of phosphorus and nitrogen to Earth as our planet was still forming. In a lot of cases, Earth\u2019s gravity probably captured these objects and pulled them in, adding them to its growing bulk.
