{"id":743389,"date":"2026-06-17T19:52:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T19:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/743389\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T19:52:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T19:52:11","slug":"pension-funds-post-gains-statistics-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/743389\/","title":{"rendered":"Pension funds post gains: Statistics Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1114\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1600x1114-pension-savings-unfiltered-iStock-busracavus-1187184203.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Pension savings\" style=\"object-fit:cover;\"  \/>iStock-busracavus<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With positive returns across most major asset classes, Canadian pension funds delivered a 6.2% gain in 2025, according to new data from Statistics Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, the national statistical agency reported that the market value of employer pension plans rose by $151.9 billion last year to $2.6 trillion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bonds and equities led the way, generating gains of $52.8 billion and $52 billion, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The value of \u201cother\u201d assets also gained $30.1 billion during the year, and infrastructure assets gained too, while real estate dropped by $1.8 billion, down  0.7%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foreign assets, which represent just more than half of pension funds\u2019 total assets, outpaced domestic categories, Statistics Canada said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, foreign bonds and equities led the gains \u2014 with both categories adding $35.5 billion in value during the year, compared with $17.4 billion for domestic bonds and $16.6 billion in domestic equities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The returns for public sector pension funds outpaced private sector funds, the national statistical agency reported \u2014 with public sector pensions adding $144.9 billion in assets (7.2%), while private sector pensions rose by $7 billion (1.5%).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, Statistics Canada noted that pension funds posted a 33.6% increase in net income to $45.4 billion for the fourth quarter, as revenues rose much faster than expenses.<\/p>\n<p>\n                Subscribe to our newsletters\n            <\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"212\" height=\"160\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Langton-James-212x160px-filtered-nonoise.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-post-image\" alt=\"James Langton headshot\" title=\"Langton-James-212x160px-filtered-nonoise\"\/>          <\/p>\n<p>          James Langton<\/p>\n<p>James is a senior reporter for Advisor.ca and its sister publication, Investment Executive.
