TEMPE, Ariz. — Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck said he\u2019s jumped in headfirst into the early days of his NFL career rather than trying to take things slow.<\/p>\n
With uncertainty at the Cardinals\u2019 starting quarterback position looming as incumbent starter Jacoby Brissett left Arizona\u2019s mandatory minicamp without the reworked contract for 2026 that he covets, according to a source, Beck could, in theory, be in play to compete to be Arizona\u2019s starter for its Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom Day 1, for me, I didn\u2019t want to ease into anything, to be completely honest,\u201d Beck said Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Beck said he\u2019s been putting in 13-hour days at the Cardinals\u2019 facility, going beyond what Arizona is asking of their rookies. After the rookies are done with their meetings, Beck said he spends time with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and quarterbacks coach Matt Schaub. Beck said he also has access to first-year head coach Mike LaFleur if he has questions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s really cool because obviously coach Schaub did it,\u201d Beck said. \u201cHe\u2019s been in the league. He played the position, which it\u2019s so hard to understand what the position of quarterback is if you haven\u2019t actually done it, right? And he has done it, he\u2019s been there, he\u2019s done it.<\/p>\n
\u201cCoach Hackett has coached amazing quarterbacks, just such a smart mind. Coach LaFleur\u2019s coached amazing quarterbacks, such a smart mind. So, just trying to pick their brains and just take every little inch and every little thing to add it to my repertoire and get as good and as comfortable as I can is something that I\u2019ve done from the second I feel like I\u2019ve stepped in the building.\u201d<\/p>\n
Beck said he\u2019s spent his almost six weeks with the Cardinals either at home or at the facility learning the playbook and soaking in everything he can.<\/p>\n
With some eating and sleeping mixed in.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause that\u2019s pretty necessary as well, being a football player,\u201d Beck said. \u201cBut, really, that\u2019s all I\u2019ve done. I\u2019ve been here a ton, been around the guys, been around the coaches, meeting and trying to learn everything as quick as possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, obviously the playbook is big. There is a lot of things to learn, but the more time that I spend and the more reps you get, the more comfortable you get with it and the more it just kind of feels like you\u2019re looking at the back of your hand.\u201d<\/p>\n
During mandatory minicamp last week, Beck had a chance to meet Brissett, who had missed all of the voluntary portions of Arizona\u2019s offseason program.<\/p>\n
Beck said they didn\u2019t talk much about anything besides football, but he enjoyed their time together.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe seems like a great guy,\u201d Beck said. \u201cSat down, had a couple conversations, nothing obviously super deep. I mean we\u2019re in the facility, we\u2019re talking about football.
