Investors are seeking signs that the U.S. stock market rally fueled by artificial intelligence has more life left in it, and the upcoming Micron Technology (MU-Q<\/a>) earnings will check the pulse of \u2060chip demand to \u200bsee if it is still accelerating. <\/p>\n

Despite a sharp mid-week selloff, major U.S. stock indexes are hovering near all-time highs, supported by robust corporate earnings driven by an AI investment boom and relief from the Iran war. <\/p>\n

Micron\u2019s shares are up 298 per cent this year, and the memory chip maker\u2019s quarterly report on Wednesday, June 24, will help investors \u200bgauge whether the surge in spending on data centers and the resulting \u200cprofits generated across the semiconductor sector can continue to surprise to the upside.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of momentum here recently,\u201d said Andy Pratt, director of investment strategy at Burney Company. \u201cThis AI trend is something that\u2019s continued, and honestly, what we see with this revenue surprise signal that we monitor is there\u2019s still a lot of juice.\u201d <\/p>\n

Apple (AAPL-Q<\/a>) has agreed to partner with Intel to design \u200cand manufacture chips in \u200bthe U.S., which could significantly \u200cboost the chipmaker\u2019s turnaround efforts. <\/p>\n

That helped to lift the S&P 500 nearly 1 per cent so far this week, on pace \u200bfor a second weekly gain. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index hit \u2060a record high and was last up 7 per cent for the week.<\/p>\n

The stakes are high. \u2060Micron\u2019s earnings come at a time when valuations are elevated and investors are questioning whether the rally is overextended. Any indication of underlying demand and \u200bcontinued AI-related spending strength could give investors confidence to keep stoking the rally. <\/p>\n

Micron\u2019s earnings are \u201csetting up as a classic positive feedback loop,\u201d said Steve Kolano, chief investment officer at Integrated Partners. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat really seems to be kind of the only game in town. … If you look at the book to bill of semiconductor companies right now and the backlog, the demand is just through the roof in relation \u2060to chip capacity.\u201d <\/p>\n

Big Tech has signaled that AI spending is not slowing, set to rise past US$700-billion this year from US$400-billion in 2025.<\/p>\n

Although the AI narrative has dominated markets, underlying macroeconomic concerns remain. The Federal Reserve\u2019s preferred inflation measure is due next week. So, too, is a final reading on first-quarter GDP. <\/p>\n

Both reports will provide checks on the health of the U.S. consumer and economic growth. <\/p>\n

Second-quarter earnings growth for the S&P \u2060500 is estimated at 22.9 per cent, down from 29.3 per cent in the first quarter, \u200baccording to data provided by Tajinder Dhillon, head of earnings research at LSEG. <\/p>\n

Drew Matus, chief market strategist at MetLife \u2060Investment Management, said strong equity markets have been one of the main supports for consumers, and anything that challenges the AI trade or the continued rise in \u200cstocks is being closely watched.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has not just been market effects but macroeconomic effects at this point,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re definitely \u200bworried about the wealth effect going away and what that might mean.\u201d For now, the consensus is that the AI trade remains intact, with little sign of slowing.<\/p>\n

Newly public SpaceX (SPCX-Q<\/a>) has reinforced that momentum, and Nasdaq\u2019s inclusion of more AI and chip infrastructure names like Astera Labs and CoreWeave will force index funds to \u200bbuy in.<\/p>\n
