{"id":748855,"date":"2026-06-20T05:40:23","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T05:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/748855\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T05:40:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T05:40:23","slug":"jimmy-kilabuk-fun-run-walk-to-traverse-the-tundra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/748855\/","title":{"rendered":"Jimmy Kilabuk Fun Run\/Walk to traverse the tundra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Change is afoot for the City of Iqaluit\u2019s Jimmy Kilabuk Fun Run\/Walk with the route traversing Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park instead of the streets of Iqaluit.<\/p>\n<p>The event is scheduled to begin June 20 at 10 a.m. and will take place on park trails. It includes competitive five-kilometre and three-kilometre routes, as well as a just-for-fun one-mile race for parents with children.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-266138\" class=\"size-full wp-image-266138\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/jimmy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"364\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-266138\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The City of Iqaluit honours the late, former Iqaluit mayor Jimmy Kilabuk with the latest edition of a fun run that bears his name. (File photo)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor people who love getting moving but just need a little extra push \u2014 it\u2019s the first time it has been in the park and the park is gorgeous,\u201d said organizer Cat Bobiash, fitness and wellness co-ordinator with the city-run Iqaluit Aquatic Centre. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe weather is supposed to be gorgeous that day, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Runners will compete for one of two Canadian North flights to Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>Chileab Yue, a fitness instructor at the centre, competed in the first Jimmy Kilabuk race in 2019. Only about nine racers took part, he said.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260619-canada-post\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/260619.100.93_Canada_Post.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year there were more than 50,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In the early years of the race, Yue would often finish in the top three. In recent years, he is lucky to break into the top 10, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s how advanced Iqaluit runners have become,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The event includes a free barbecue with grilled Arctic char, hot dogs and hamburgers. Providing music will be Greenlandic singer\/songwriter Naja P, backed by fellow Greenlander Jaaku Soerensen on guitar. Igloolik musician Terry Uyarak will follow.<\/p>\n<p>There is a $25 registration fee for the races.<\/p>\n<p>The money raised will support the city\u2019s Jimmy Kilabuk Children\u2019s Recreation Fund, established in 2017 to support Inuit children and families on income assistance to participate in programs at the aquatic centre.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260612-kitia-kqbr\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/260612.100.95_KITIA_KQBR.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kilabuk, a former firefighter and prison guard, served as Iqaluit mayor from 1997 to 2000.
