{"id":74906,"date":"2025-08-16T21:05:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T21:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/74906\/"},"modified":"2025-08-16T21:05:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T21:05:08","slug":"heres-how-to-spot-a-text-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/74906\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s how to spot a text scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CTV News has reported on bank customers who have been scammed out of thousands of dollars after clicking on links that have been texted to them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">CTV News Toronto recently reported on two women who were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/article\/phone-stopped-working-2-ontario-women-lose-more-than-50k-after-clicking-link-texted-to-them\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/article\/phone-stopped-working-2-ontario-women-lose-more-than-50k-after-clicking-link-texted-to-them\/\">scammed out of more than $50,000 combined<\/a> after clicking on a link that was texted to them. But how can you tell if the text you received is fraudulent?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While their texts purported to come from their respective banks, some scams pose as courier services claiming packages have been delayed or the driver was unable to deliver their parcel before asking the victim to click the link to proceed with next steps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The messages can appear legitimate and are designed to sound urgent, pressuring the victim to act fast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cScammers are good. At first glance, the text will look like it\u2019s from a real source that requires your immediate attention. But not so far,\u201d Consumer Reports\u2019 Lisa Fogarty said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Fradusters can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/article\/ontario-man-who-almost-fell-for-text-scam-issues-warning-to-others\/#:~:text=Cybersecurity%20experts%20say%20criminals%20are%20flooding%20inboxes%20with%20scam%20messages%20impersonating%20banks%2C%20courier%20companies%2C%20Canada%20Post%2C%20Highway%20407%20ETR%20and%20Revenue%20Canada.\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/article\/ontario-man-who-almost-fell-for-text-scam-issues-warning-to-others\/#:~:text=Cybersecurity%20experts%20say%20criminals%20are%20flooding%20inboxes%20with%20scam%20messages%20impersonating%20banks%2C%20courier%20companies%2C%20Canada%20Post%2C%20Highway%20407%20ETR%20and%20Revenue%20Canada.\">impersonate toll collection agencies<\/a> like the 407 ETR, sending texts demanding immediate payment to avoid a late fee. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbb.org\/scamtracker\/lookupscam\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bbb.org\/scamtracker\/lookupscam\">Better Business Bureau\u2019s (BBB) scam tracker,<\/a> toll road scams are on the rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cFor some people who don\u2019t deal with tolls all the time, to see that text message they may think, \u2018I might have gone through a toll. I\u2019m just going to pay it. It\u2019s only $12,\u2019\u201d said Melanie McGovern with the BBB. \u201cBut then they have your credit card information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">McGovern says there is usually a link embedded in the text, asking for personal information like your credit card details. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cTapping or clicking the link can install malware on your device,\u201d said McGovern. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">So, how can you tell if it is a scam? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">If you received a questionable email, there are some tell-tale red flags to keep an eye out for, like emails or web addresses that almost look real. Postal services, for example, also won\u2019t contact you from a Gmail account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Additionally, do not click on links or download files from unexpected emails or texts.
