<\/p>\nOffensive defensemen are playing an increasingly important role in today\u2019s NHL. Every year, several prospects stand out for their ability to support the attack, quarterback the power play, and generate scoring chances from the blue line. Players such as Matthew Schaefer and Lane Hutson have recently showcased the value of this skill set. As the 2026 NHL Draft approaches, the members of TSLH Espoirs have identified the players they believe stand out the most in this aspect of the game within their draft class.<\/p>\n
In total, only six different prospects managed to earn a spot on the top-five lists of our TSLH Espoirs contributors. The 2026 draft class features several high-end defensemen who are projected to be selected near the top of the draft, which helps explain the strong consensus among our scouts. Two candidates stand out from the rest, as both appeared in the top two of every contributor\u2019s rankings, further cementing their status as the premier offensive defensemen in this draft class.<\/p>\n

Top 5: Chase Reid and Xavier Villeneuve at the Top<\/p>\n
Defensemen Chase Reid and Xavier Villeneuve both appear in the top two of every contributor\u2019s rankings. Both stand out for their ability to operate smoothly along the blue line and generate offense, but they do so in very different ways. Reid\u2019s greatest strength lies in his shot. Whether it\u2019s his wrist shot or his slap shot, he owns one of the most dangerous shooting arsenals in this draft class, making him a constant threat in the offensive zone.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Villeneuve distinguishes himself more through his mobility, creativity, and playmaking ability. His skating allows him to create space and efficiently transport the puck, while his vision enables him to set up teammates in high-danger positions. Despite their contrasting styles, both Reid and Villeneuve project as highly attractive offensive defenseman profiles for NHL organizations, which explains why they so clearly dominate our experts\u2019 rankings.<\/p>\n
Next, two other prospects saw their names appear on all of our TSLH Espoirs contributors\u2019 lists: Daxon Rudolph and Tommy Bleyl. Despite fairly different profiles, both players served as key pieces for their respective teams this season. Their importance within their lineups and their overall impact on results earned them a prominent place among the top prospects in the 2026 NHL Draft class.<\/p>\n
Finally, Keaton Verhoeff received two mentions, while Alberts Smits appeared on only one top-five list, that of Simon Servant. Even so, both defensemen possess traits that set them apart in this class. Already competing against professional players, Smits shows a great deal of confidence with the puck and has stood out on several occasions in the offensive zone. Verhoeff, meanwhile, draws attention with the sheer power of his slap shot, widely regarded as one of the best among eligible 2026 draft prospects.<\/p>\n
