{"id":7513,"date":"2025-07-19T07:26:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T07:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/7513\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T07:26:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T07:26:10","slug":"final-gran-fondo-on-closed-public-roads-to-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/7513\/","title":{"rendered":"Final Gran Fondo on closed public roads to start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The final edition of a mass participation cycling event held on closed public roads is set to take place ahead of its reincarnation into an off-road competition.<\/p>\n<p>Gran Fondo Isle of Man runs over both days of the weekend, with rolling road closures on Sunday to accommodate three of the four challenges in the series.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers have said the event will be transformed into a collection of races on gravel, tracks, and private land in 2026, a decade after it was first run on public roads.<\/p>\n<p>Regularly attracting entrants from places from as far afield as Japan, Australia and South Africa, more than 1,000 competitors have entered the 2025 event.<\/p>\n<p>It was originally run under the banner of CycleFest in 2016 before evolving into the Gran Fondo Isle of Man brand.<\/p>\n<p>All-time Tour de France stage win record holder Mark Cavendish is among the 8,000 past participants in the event, along with many of the island&#8217;s other top cyclists.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers previously said the event would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn54wy013r2o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:brought to a close;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">brought to a close<\/a> in 2025 after its scale had become &#8220;enormous&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Crowds of people in the Mooragh Park in Ramsey. Many are sitting on blue deckchairs and there are food stalls and vans in the background.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/5a3733798fb48dd27b3d44d2fa54ef2f.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The start and finish of each class is at the race village in Ramsey&#8217;s Mooragh Park [GRAN FONDO ISLE OF MAN]<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s event will see the main classes held over three distances on Sunday \u2013 in the Gran Fondo, Medio Fondo and Piccolo Fondo.<\/p>\n<p>But for younger participants, a family friendly Minisculo Fondo takes place within the race village at the Mooragh Park in Ramsey over a 0.6-mile (1km) distance on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>That event begins at 15:00 BST in the northern park, with the other three classes being run with staggered starts the following day.<\/p>\n<p>Gran Fondo<\/p>\n<p>Start time: 09:30<\/p>\n<p>Distance: 85 miles (137km)<\/p>\n<p>Route: The course starts in Ramsey in a northerly direction along the coast through Dog Mills, Bride, Smeale, The Lhen, Sandygate and Ballaugh.<\/p>\n<p>It then travels through the west of the island via Druidale, Sartfield, Little London, Staarvey, Ballig, St John&#8217;s and Patrick.<\/p>\n<p>The southern section of the route passes through Glen Maye, Dalby, the Round Table, Ronague, Corlea, South Barrule, and the Rushen Mines through to Lower Foxdale.<\/p>\n<p>Competitors will then head back to St John&#8217;s, heading to The Hope, Archallagan, Garth, Crosby and Mount Rule before heading towards the Mountain Road via West Baldwin, Injebreck and Brandywell, before turning down Tholt-y-Will at the Bunglalow.<\/p>\n<p>The final part of the course runs through the Sulby Claddaghs, St Jude&#8217;s and back to Ramsey.<\/p>\n<p>Medio Fondo<\/p>\n<p>Start time: 09:45<\/p>\n<p>Distance: 45 miles (72km)<\/p>\n<p>Route: Diverts from the main route at Ballaugh, heading straight to Brandywell Cottage and bypassing the southern section of the course.<\/p>\n<p>Piccolo Fondo<\/p>\n<p>Start time: 10:00<\/p>\n<p>Distance: 20 miles (32km)<\/p>\n<p>Route: Remains on the largely flat northern plain of the island, returning to Ramsey after reaching St Jude&#8217;s on the main route.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"An aerial view of a group of cyclists on a narrow country road in the hills.
