But let us remember that of the roughly 5 per cent of deaths in Canada occurring through MAID, almost all have gone as expected and provided dignity to those seeking it.

If we are a compassionate society, we should carry that compassion through to end of life. We should push for advance wishes for those with illnesses such as dementia, so they too can be comforted that their end will be dignified, and they will not live out their end years in a cognitively and physically diminished state.

It is easy to look for what is wrong, but let us keep perspective and focus on what is right, then build from there.

Cheryl Altman Collingwood, Ont.

My father begged me to help end his life, due to pain from bone metastases, even though he was being cared for in a palliative setting affiliated with a hospital. Management, coaching decisions, roster construction and inconsistent performances from multiple players all contributed to the team’s inability to contend for a Stanley Cup. Yet he became the symbol of that frustration.

What often gets overlooked is that he is one of the league’s elite playmakers, a strong two-way player and a key contributor in all situations. Many scoring chances he created in the playoffs went unfinished by teammates, but playmakers rarely receive the same recognition as goalscorers.

That Toronto missed the playoffs after Mr. Marner’s departure should prompt a reassessment of his value.
