{"id":754030,"date":"2026-06-22T17:40:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T17:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/754030\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T17:40:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T17:40:15","slug":"edmonton-oilers-sign-connor-murphy-to-20-5-million-contract-extension-daily-hive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/754030\/","title":{"rendered":"Edmonton Oilers sign Connor Murphy to $20.5-million contract extension | Daily Hive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Edmonton Oilers have brought back another player on a long-term contract extension.<\/p>\n<p>Just a day after <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/edmonton\/oilers-trying-sign-two-players-free-agency-murphy-dickinson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">inking Jason Dickinson to a five-year extension<\/a>, the team announced on Monday that they had done the same for defenceman Connor Murphy.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy\u2019s new five-year contract will carry a $4.1-million cap hit and run through the 2030-31 NHL season.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">MURPH \ud83d\udc4a<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Oilers?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">#Oilers<\/a> have signed defenceman Connor Murphy to a five-year contract with an AAV of $4.1 million. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7avMhxiYDt\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/7avMhxiYDt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Edmonton Oilers (@EdmontonOilers) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EdmontonOilers\/status\/2069095592719216875?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">June 22, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 33-year-old defenceman was initially acquired by the Oilers at last year\u2019s trade deadline in a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/edmonton\/oilers-trade-murphy-blackhawks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">deal with the Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>. Murphy became a mainstay in Edmonton\u2019s top four down the stretch and was an important piece of their blueline in the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy managed a goal and four points in 20 regular-season games in Edmonton last year, but bumped those numbers up to two goals and three points in just six playoff games.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to Dickinson, Murphy is not known to bring much offence to the table, but he excels in the defensive zone. Considering team defence was a weakness for the Oilers, and the expectation that Darnell Nurse will be traded away this summer, bringing back Murphy was an important step for Edmonton\u2019s offseason plan.<\/p>\n<p>This new extension is a good one in the short term, but it will involve a bit of risk for the Oilers, as Murphy will be 38 when the contract expires. That leaves a lot of room for Murphy\u2019s game to potentially regress as he gets older.<\/p>\n<p>The contract will contain a full no-trade clause for the first three years of the contract, which will revert to a 16-team trade list in the final two years.<\/p>\n<p>Oilers GM Stan Bowman will now turn his attention to his remaining UFAs, which include both Jack Roslovic and Kasperi Kapanen.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Edmonton Oilers have brought back another player on a long-term contract extension.
