{"id":754948,"date":"2026-06-23T03:23:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T03:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/754948\/"},"modified":"2026-06-23T03:23:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T03:23:13","slug":"consulting-reigns-supreme-among-iqaluit-businesses-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/754948\/","title":{"rendered":"Consulting reigns supreme among Iqaluit businesses: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Consulting is the largest sector among registered businesses in Iqaluit, according to statistics presented to a committee meeting by city economic development officer Dominik Gagn\u00e9 on June 16.<\/p>\n<p>Following the launch of a new business registration portal last November, there are 495 registered businesses in Iqaluit, according to Gagn\u00e9. Of those, 51 are consulting services, which provide a range of strategic advice that includes research and regulatory process navigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of consulting businesses reflects Iqaluit\u2019s project-based economy, and encouragingly, many are locally based \u2014 with residents potentially transitioning into consulting and home-based work during the last few years,\u201d reads a statement from the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce, which executive director Rowena House sent to Nunatsiaq News.<\/p>\n<p>Also registered with the city are 39 retail businesses, 36 accommodation and food services, 29 non-profits and 26 construction companies, according to figures in Gagn\u00e9\u2019s presentation.<\/p>\n<p>While most businesses in Iqaluit operate on a property with a fixed business address, there are 116 home-based businesses, according to Gagn\u00e9\u2019s presentation.<\/p>\n<p>There 46 registered \u201cnon-resident\u201d registered businesses, as well as six \u201chawker\u201d businesses, which refers to businesses that operate in a mobile capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to see strong representation in consulting, retail, professional services, construction, hospitality and support services, which reflects the continued strength and diversification of the local economy,\u201d Gagn\u00e9 said in his presentation.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260619-canada-post\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/260619.100.93_Canada_Post.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He said the city is upgrading the business registration portal for next year and working to support the business community through workshops and better infrastructure, Gagn\u00e9 said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to identify a need for affordable commercial space, particularly for new and emerging businesses looking to establish themselves here locally and have a foot on the ground,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>House, with the chamber of commerce, echoed a similar sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIqaluit has a strong base of entrepreneurs,\u201d House said. \u201cWorking in partnership with the city, the next step is ensuring those businesses have the conditions to grow \u2014 through better access to space, infrastructure, and opportunities \u2014 so we are building long-term economic strength, not just maintaining numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Consulting is the largest sector among registered businesses in Iqaluit, according to statistics presented to a committee meeting&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":754949,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[49,48,295,66],"class_list":["post-754948","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-environment","tag-science"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/754948","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=754948"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/754948\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/754949"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=754948"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=754948"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=754948"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
