A major New Zealand supplement retailer has removed products from sale and apologised to customers after labelling and packing issues were identified.\u00a0<\/p>\n
NZ Muscle told the Herald an internal review found several whey protein and creatine products had \u201cnon-compliant packing\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The affected products included No Brand Isolate, No Brand Whey Plus, No Brand creatine products, NZ Muscle Creatine and Shotgun Creatine.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The company said affected creatine products had been removed from its online and retail shops.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The review also found two protein products, No Brand Whey Plus and No Brand Isolate, had been \u201crelabelled inappropriately\u201d, and were also removed from sale.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNZ Muscle apologises for these issues and invites affected customers to request refunds directly.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s statement followed a YouTube video that raised concerns about the company\u2019s packing, labelling and regulatory compliance.\u00a0<\/p>\n
New Zealand Food Safety acting deputy director-general Mike Inglis said the agency was aware of the claims and \u201cexamining the evidence\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIf there was any breach of food safety regulations or risk to consumers we would take appropriate action,\u201d Inglis said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Commerce Commission was assessing whether it would undertake an investigation into the company.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Simon Pope, head of fair trading and product safety investigations, said it had received 26 concerns about NZ Muscle between November 2016 and the publication of the YouTube video.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis includes the 2021 concern publicised in the video. At the time, the concern was assessed and screened but did not progress to an investigation,\u201d Pope said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile we cannot investigate every concern, they collectively provide us with crucial intel and data on trends.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIn light of the fresh allegations as to the scale and ongoing nature of the conduct, we can confirm we are currently reassessing this matter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
NZ Muscle said it would co-operate fully with any investigation and \u201crejects any other claims made against its products or processes\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The company said it holds a current food registration under the Food Act 2014, as well as Hasta (Human and Supplement Testing Australia) certifications.\u00a0<\/p>\n
NZ Muscle was founded by Dion Roosenbrand in 2006.\u00a0<\/p>\n
