{"id":758752,"date":"2026-06-24T20:47:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T20:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/758752\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T20:47:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T20:47:12","slug":"msu-scientists-uncover-how-ovarian-cancer-resists-chemotherapy-and-how-to-reverse-it-msutoday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/758752\/","title":{"rendered":"MSU scientists uncover how ovarian cancer resists chemotherapy \u2014 and how to reverse it\u00a0 | MSUToday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michigan State University researchers have identified how ovarian cancer cells become resistant to chemotherapy and discovered a protein, that, when blocked, can restore the drug\u2019s effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2211124726004924\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The findings<\/a>, published in Cell Reports, center on cisplatin, a widely used chemotherapy drug first discovered at MSU in 1965 and still considered among the gold standard for treating ovarian and other cancers. It&#8217;s been long understood that cisplatin works by damaging cancer cells&#8217; DNA, but this study shows that it also disrupts microtubules, which are the internal scaffolding cells rely on to survive. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have learned how cancer cells adapt to chemotherapy by altering their internal structure,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/precisionhealth.msu.edu\/people\/faculty\/sachi-horibata\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sachi Horibata<\/a>, assistant professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/precisionhealth.msu.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Precision Health Program<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/phmtox.msu.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology<\/a> at the MSU <a href=\"https:\/\/humanmedicine.msu.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">College of Human Medicine<\/a> and one of the lead researchers on the study. \u201cThis enables them to survive and ultimately resist treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/8816ba1ed9cd45f08a02dfd480ac99d7.webp\" alt=\"Sachi Horibata, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Precision Health Program and the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.\" width=\"400\"\/>Sachi Horibata, an assistant professor in the Precision Health Program, Cell and Molecular Biology program\u202fand the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Michigan State University <a href=\"https:\/\/humanmedicine.msu.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">College of Human Medicine<\/a>, is one of the lead researchers on the new study that shows how ovarian cancer cells become resistant to chemotherapy. Photo courtesy of Harry Horibata-Vo. <\/p>\n<p>At the center of that process is a protein called tubulin polymerization promoting protein 3, or TPPP3. The researchers found that cancer cells with higher levels of TPPP3 were better able to stabilize their internal scaffolding and withstand the effects of cisplatin or carboplatin that tries to destroy that internal scaffold.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, patients with lower levels of TPPP3 lived longer and responded better to treatment. In laboratory models, removing the protein significantly restored cancer cells\u2019 sensitivity to cisplatin, suggesting a new approach to overcoming resistance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTPPP3 acts like a protective shield for cancer cells,\u201d Horibata said. \u201cWhen we remove it, we weaken the cell\u2019s defenses and allow chemotherapy to work more effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The discovery also helps explain why some patients are told they are cancer-free, only to see the disease return.<\/p>\n<p>After her grandmother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, Horibata made it her life\u2019s work to understand that pattern \u2014 why tumors initially respond to treatment but later come back stronger.<\/p>\n<p>This research shows progress in her quest. Rather than simply repairing DNA damage, cancer cells can reprogram what scientists call the \u201ctubulin code\u201d \u2014 a set of structural changes that help stabilize microtubules and support survival under stress.<\/p>\n<p>By shifting focus beyond DNA to the physical structure of cancer cells, researchers say the findings could open the door to improving existing treatments rather than replacing them.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are now working to translate these findings into new treatment strategies, including developing drugs that target TPPP3 and testing whether the protein can be used as a biomarker to identify patients at risk of developing resistance. Future studies will also examine how this mechanism affects current chemotherapy combinations and whether it plays a role in fighting other cancer types.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about staying one step ahead of cancer,\u201d Horibata said. \u201cIf scientists can understand how tumors adapt to survive treatment, we can start to block that process \u2014 making existing therapies more effective, more durable and ultimately more personalized for each patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The findings may also have broader implications.
