Santiago/Getty Images

For a few days last week, it looked as though the Middle East’s grip on interest rates might finally loosen.

As word spread that the United States and Iran had all but finalized the Islamabad Memorandum — a 14-point framework that pauses the war for 60 days and commits both sides to reopening the Strait of Hormuz — bond prices rallied and yields fell on both sides of the border, ahead of the formal signing.

The relief did not last. On June 17th, new U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh used his first news conference to strike an unmistakably hawkish tone. The Fed held its policy rate but tilted its projections toward possible hikes, repeteadly citing a return to “price stability.”

The U.S. two-year yield logged its biggest jump on a Fed day since 2008, Canadian yields backed up alongside it, and in a single session the hawkish Fed had drowned out the truce.

The Fed’s caution rests on an energy story that a signed framework cannot fix overnight. Reopening Hormuz is one thing – restoring the actual flow of crude oil and LNG to pre-war levels takes months.

Tanker traffic is “rising meaningfully,” U.S. officials say, yet global oil inventories are still drawing down — by nearly four million barrels a day since the war began, including 140 million barrels in May alone, according to the International Energy Agency.

Thinning stockpiles into peak summer demand keep the pressure on inflation, here as much as in the U.S. And the framework is fragile: a 60-day ceasefire, not a peace treaty, with the hardest questions deferred and parties absent from the talks still able to reopen a front.

For Canadian savers, what matters is the Government of Canada curve, because that — not the Bank of Canada’s policy rate alone — is what banks and credit unions use to price term deposits.

The Bank is holding at 2.25 per cent, but the market has stopped looking for the next cut: with May inflation at 3.2 per cent and energy risks building, CORRA forward pricing now leans toward a quarter-point hike to 2.50 per cent by December, drifting toward 2.75 per cent in 2027.

The front end, anchored to today’s rate, has barely budged; further out, one- to five-year GIC rates have nudged up five to ten basis points since mid-May. A five-year GIC near 4.10 per cent now sits about a full point above the government benchmark.

Rates in brief

On the cash side – so savings account rates – promos still set the pace. The top promo savings rate is 4.65 per cent at BMO for four months, with a three-way tie at 4.60 per cent among Simplii for five months, RBC and CIBC at three months each. Standard rates are unchanged at the top: 2.85 per cent at Saven Financial, then 2.80 per cent at Oaken Financial.

On the borrowing side, the lowest mortgage rates are 3.30 per cent variable and 3.94 per cent fixed — the cheapest money for borrowers still sits below the best returns on offer to savers.

GIC rates are where the medium-term inflation premium shows up:

1-year GIC: 3.65 per cent at MCAN, with a 3.60 per cent tie between Saven and Achieva just behind.2-year GIC: 3.90 per cent, a tie between MCAN and WealthONE, with Oaken and Saven at 3.85 per cent.3-year GIC: 3.90 per cent, a tie between WealthONE and MCAN, with Oaken and Saven at 3.85 per cent.5-year GIC: 4.10 per cent at WealthONE, followed by a 4.05 per cent tie among MCAN, Oaken, Saven and Achieva.

Versus mid-May, the front end is flat while two- to five-year rates have crept higher — the signature of investors demanding more compensation to lock money up through a stretch of uncertain inflation.

What it means for savers

Cash still has its place: 4.65 per cent for four months suits money you may need soon. But the signal is further out. A hawkish Fed, a throttled Strait of Hormuz and falling oil inventories all point to medium-term inflation that is not going quietly.

A three- or five-year GIC locks in a yield comfortably above both policy and inflation — yet with the market leaning toward hikes rather than cuts, it is no race: savers who expect rates to climb may prefer shorter terms they can roll over.

The reward for going long is real, but so is the case for keeping some powder dry.

Interest rates are provided by WOWA.ca, which gathers, aggregates and freely disseminates data on mortgage rates, savings accounts, and GIC rates from 50+ Canadian financial institutions.

Ali Nassimi, is a financial writer and analyst at WOWA.ca, a Canadian personal finance platform.

Open this photo in gallery: A TV displays U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s news conference as traders…

[11
45,49,48,46,2741,49174
post-759711","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economy","tag-business","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-economy","tag-pf-ca","tag-streetwise
["GET
