Tarun Bali in Hearst appeared in court via video remand on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">An 18-year-old accused of killing an Ontario Provincial Police officer in Hearst, Ont., earlier this month made his first court appearance Wednesday morning by video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Const. Tarun Bali, 29, died June 9 when he was struck by a vehicle. Justin Veronneau, 18, of Hearst, has been charged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/northern-ontario\/article\/suspect-charged-with-first-degree-murder-after-opp-officer-killed-in-line-of-duty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/northern-ontario\/article\/suspect-charged-with-first-degree-murder-after-opp-officer-killed-in-line-of-duty\/\">first-degree murder in the case<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Here\u2019s what we know about the OPP constable killed in northern Ontario\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ZOZVMY47RJAJZJCYVNSHILAONI.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>Here\u2019s what we know about the OPP constable killed in northern Ontario Const. (File photo\/OPP Commisioner Thomas Carrique\/X) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Bali was from Brampton but was working in Hearst temporarily when he was killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Reports said that Veronneau was being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/northern-ontario\/article\/18-year-old-facing-first-degree-murder-charge-in-death-of-ontario-police-officer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/northern-ontario\/article\/18-year-old-facing-first-degree-murder-charge-in-death-of-ontario-police-officer\/\">evaluated in hospital under the Mental Health Act<\/a> when he escaped. OPP accuse him of driving the vehicle that struck and killed Bali as police were trying to capture him.<\/p>\n<p>Returns to court Aug. 19<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In addition to first-degree murder, Veronneau is charged with assaulting police, resisting arrest, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, dangerous operation of a vehicle and two counts of flight from police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Veronneau appeared on video remand June 24 from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/correctional-facilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/correctional-facilities\">Monteith Correctional Complex<\/a> in Iroquois Falls. Justice Lynn A. Grzela of the Ontario Court of Justice presided over the hearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Lawyer Sharon G.
