The World Cup has \u201ccome at exactly the right time\u201d for Vancouver sports fans, given the current sports climate in the city, according to Emmanuel Morgan of the N.Y. TIMES. The Canucks finished with the worst record in the NHL last season, and the city is \u201cin jeopardy of losing\u201d the Whitecaps in a standoff between billionaires and the government of British Columbia. The Whitecaps were valued at more than $400M when the team was put up for sale in 2024, but \u201cno local buyer emerged.\u201d The strongest pitch came from a Las Vegas investment group that offered to build a new stadium in Nevada. No timeline for a decision has been set, but the Whitecaps said in a statement that the ownership group\u2019s \u201cpreference was to \u2018find a solution in Vancouver.\u2019\u201d The team\u2019s temporary lease in BC Place expires at the end of the year and the \u201csituation has galvanized Vancouver fans.\u201d Whitecaps fan group Vancouver Southsiders member Kevin Kerr, that started the social media campaign #SaveTheCaps<\/a>, said that the World Cup had \u201cbrought global exposure to the relocation issue.\u201d Kerr added that he had talked with World Cup visitors from other countries who \u201cwere unaware that such a conflict was even possible.\u201d Vancouver Host Committee Lead Jessie Adcock said that the tournament had \u201cprovided visibility to larger issues while also serving as a release.\u201d Canada ultimately lost to Switzerland, 2-1, in the tournament but still advanced out of group play. The team would have remained in Vancouver with a win but must now travel to Inglewood, Calif. (N.Y.
