Betsy Rosa Owens was last seen at a school dance in Pauingassi First Nation on Oct. 23, 1988.<\/p>\n
RCMP have recently travelled to Pauingassi, located about 280 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, to continue the investigation, which has remained active over the years.<\/p>\n
Police believe the person responsible for Betsy\u2019s death is from the community of approximately 700 people.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s such a tight-knit community and people, I believe, know exactly what happened to Betsy but are too afraid to talk,\u201d RCMP Const. Shaylyn Brazier says in a video posted on the force\u2019s YouTube channel.<\/p>\n
The video includes comments from Pauingassi residents, a former area chief and Betsy\u2019s sister, who seek closure.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve spent nearly my whole life without my sister,\u201d Sally Owens said in the release. \u201cAll I want is to bring Betsy home so she can rest with our family. If you know something \u2014 anything \u2014 please come forward. It\u2019s never too late.\u201d<\/p>\n
She is the last-surviving member of the family and said her father forgave the \u201cpeople who did this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lac du Bonnet RCMP called off the search for Betsy about a week after she went missing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think she\u2019s alive because she\u2019s been lost for so long,\u201d her father David Owens, told the Free Press at the time through an Ojibway interpreter. \u201cBut we\u2019re still optimistic.\u201d<\/p>\n
A 1996 Free Press story reported veteran Mounties said the case was one of the most frustrating they\u2019d ever seen, noting members of the community would either clam up when questioned or throw out wild accusations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never seen anything this strange before,\u201d Const. Gabe Roulette said at the time. \u201cWhen we start asking questions, it\u2019s like someone closes a zipper over their mouths.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen, other times, they won\u2019t stop talking, but it\u2019s all wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brazier said over the years the willingness for people to come forward has changed, noting Mounties have continued to receive \u201cnew and important information and evidence\u201d from the community.<\/p>\n
The video ends with the words: \u201cSilence protects no one.\u201d<\/p>\n
