{"id":761350,"date":"2026-06-26T00:40:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T00:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/761350\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T00:40:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T00:40:10","slug":"sony-lays-off-most-of-the-destiny-team-and-some-marathon-devs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/761350\/","title":{"rendered":"Sony lays off &#8216;most&#8217; of the Destiny team and &#8216;some&#8217; Marathon devs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), Bungie&#8217;s parent company, is laying off &#8220;most&#8221; of the Destiny team, &#8220;some&#8221; Marathon developers, and eliminating a number of roles across SIE teams that support the studio&#8217;s operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">SIE CEO Hermen Hulst <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sonyinteractive.com\/en\/news\/blog\/an-update-from-playstation-studios-2\/\">shared the news<\/a> in a blog post this morning and explained those impacted at Bungie and within SIE are &#8220;being informed today.&#8221; While Hulst didn&#8217;t specify how many roles are being cut, he said a &#8220;significant number&#8221; of employees will be made redundant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">&#8220;This decision was made only after extensive discussion and careful consideration, and I want to provide some context on how we arrived here,&#8221; added Hulst. &#8220;Over the past several months, together with Bungie leadership, we reviewed the studio&#8217;s long-term direction, development priorities, resource needs, and role within our broader portfolio strategy. We explored multiple alternatives before concluding that a reduction was necessary to align the studio&#8217;s resources with its current priorities and long-term goals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-component=\"related-article\" class=\"RelatedArticle\">Related:<a class=\"RelatedArticle-RelatedContent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gamedeveloper.com\/business\/vr-dev-combat-waffle-studios-lays-off-staff\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">VR dev Combat Waffle Studios lays off staff<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Last month, Bungie announced it was <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gamedeveloper.com\/business\/destiny-2-s-active-development-will-end-in-june\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ending live development on <\/a><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link ContentText-BodyTextChunk_italic\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gamedeveloper.com\/business\/destiny-2-s-active-development-will-end-in-june\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Destiny 2<\/a>, with a June 9 update serving as a farewell. The news came after Sony&#8217;s reveal last fall that Destiny 2 was <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gamedeveloper.com\/business\/sony-says-destiny-2-has-underperformed-since-it-acquired-bungie\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">not performing to the parent company&#8217;s expectations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">As a reminder, Sony purchased Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022, around five years after Destiny 2&#8217;s original release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Four years later, following the news about the end of live development, Bloomberg <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-21\/bungie-plans-layoffs-after-ending-destiny-2-development?accessToken=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJzb3VyY2UiOiJTdWJzY3JpYmVyR2lmdGVkQXJ0aWNsZSIsImlhdCI6MTc3OTQwNTI3OSwiZXhwIjoxNzgwMDEwMDc5LCJhcnRpY2xlSWQiOiJURkVUVjJLSUpIOTIwMCIsImJjb25uZWN0SWQiOiJCMUVBQkI5NjQ2QUM0REZFQTJBRkI4MjI1MzgyQTJFQSJ9.atbS1PFknTC7XBSdrUHEMV1jz4pw1lfmIX0rGjUFbRs&amp;leadSource=uverify%20wall\">reported<\/a> that Sony was preparing to jettison a &#8220;significant&#8221; number of Bungie workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Bloomberg&#8217;s report also mentioned that Bungie is now pivoting its efforts to Marathon, which Hulst confirmed in today&#8217;s announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">&#8220;Marathon remains an important part of our portfolio, and we will continue to support the team as they build on the strong foundation established in Season 1 and 2, and as they work on incubation efforts for future projects. While it&#8217;s too early to discuss, we are encouraged by the creativity and opportunities that lie ahead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Hulst said SIE will provide &#8220;transition support&#8221; to impacted workers and is attempting to identify relocation opportunities across SIE and the company&#8217;s global network of studios &#8220;where possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">&#8220;I know today&#8217;s news is deeply difficult not only for those leaving, but for those colleagues and friends that remain.
