(File photo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/author\/jorge-maria-antunes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t Jorge Antunes<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Beginning Tuesday, Rankin Inlet residents could access the hamlet\u2019s new \u201cfully accessible, barrier-free\u201d airport terminal, the Government of Nunavut announced.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">\u201cI am very happy that the Rankin Inlet Air Terminal is open,\u201d said Annie Tattuinee, MLA for Rankin Inlet South, in an email Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Travellers throughout the Kivalliq Region will experience a more modern and comfortable space during their travels, she added.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">The Rankin Inlet airport is the last of\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/airport-terminals-in-5-communities-should-be-ready-in-december-minister\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-tooltip-position=\"top\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/airport-terminals-in-5-communities-should-be-ready-in-december-minister\/\">six recently announced<\/a> projects to come online. In November 2024, the territory said it would build new terminals in Chesterfield Inlet, <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/new-air-terminal-buildings-open-in-whale-cove-kugluktuk-and-naujaat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-tooltip-position=\"top\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/new-air-terminal-buildings-open-in-whale-cove-kugluktuk-and-naujaat\/\">Naujaat, Whale Cove, Kugluktuk<\/a> and Kimmirut, in addition to the larger Rankin Inlet project.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">The $85-million price tag was split between the federal government at $63.5 million and the GN at $21.5 million.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">The 2,650-square-metre facility has capacity for 508 passengers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">All operations have moved to the new building, including air traffic control, Greg Belanger, a spokesperson for Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut, wrote Tuesday in an email.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260619-atuqtuarviq-kellett\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/260619.100.91.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">A second phase of the project is slated to begin this summer and expected to be complete by April 2028.
