(File photo by Arty Sarkisian)<\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/author\/jeffp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_4759-scaled-e1741889299927-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n\t Jeff Pelletier<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A proposed 116-unit public housing development for the base of Iqaluit\u2019s Hospital Hill received city council approval Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Councillors unanimously approved a development permit for the two 58-unit, five-storey structures, as well as third-reading of a bylaw that increases density limits for the area.<\/p>\n<p>A set of now-demolished row homes previously occupied the Niaqunngusiariaq Road lots where the new builds will be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m obviously very happy to support this,\u201d said deputy Mayor Kim Smith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been in favour of this development from the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The proposed development has had a few hurdles since it was introduced at the planning and development committee in May.<\/p>\n<p>The committee initially <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/iqaluit-committee-rejects-rezoning-bid-for-116-new-public-housing-units\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rejected<\/a> the proposal, with some councillors raising concerns about parking and the city\u2019s lack of a general development plan.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260612-psac\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/A-14734-PSAC.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>City administrators revised and brought the proposal back later that month.<\/p>\n<p>When a <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/iqaluit-bylaw-that-allows-116-unit-hospital-hill-build-advanced\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public hearing<\/a> was held in June for residents to weigh in, only two residents shared their thoughts \u2013 one in favour and one opposed to the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>At Tuesday\u2019s meeting, Smith added that the city should consider adding a playground nearby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is 116 families that we\u2019re talking about and a lot of children,\u201d Smith said. \u201cThis is a huge influx of people into that area and it is a very busy road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Solomon Awa, Smith, Kyle Sheppard and Methusalah Kunuk were the only councillors in the chamber, while Romeyn Stevenson participated by videoconference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Housing\u00a0\u00a0Jun 25, 2026 \u2013 2:30 pm EDT Proposal previously blocked by city committee Nunavut Housing Corp. has the&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":761531,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[49,48,295,66],"class_list":["post-761530","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-environment","tag-science"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/761530","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=761530"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/761530\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/761531"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=761530"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=761530"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=761530"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
