Canadian exchange-traded funds hit a milestone this month as rising markets, expanding product options and booming inflows pushed gross assets under management (AUM) past $1-trillion, according to a new TD Securities Inc. report<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gross AUM includes Canadian ETFs\u2019 holdings of other Canadian ETFs. Data providers generally use net AUM, which totalled $879-billion as of June 19, in ETF research to eliminate the double-counting. <\/p>\n

Still, the threshold is significant and, based on the current growth rate, net AUM should top $1-trillion next year, said Casey Yang, director of ETF sales and strategy at TD Securities, in an e-mail.<\/p>\n

To reach $1-trillion in gross AUM, Canada\u2019s ETF industry has seen a 26 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) during the past decade, making it one of the world\u2019s fastest-growing markets, the TD Securities report said. More than $125-billion<\/a> of net new assets were added last year.<\/p>\n

The growing number of product options, which now exceed 2,000, has contributed to the growth, with active strategies, covered calls and alternatives taking off in recent years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis rapid expansion reflects both stronger demand for differentiated solutions and intensifying competition among issuers,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n

The sheer number of products, many of them targeting do-it-yourself investors, has created a new challenge for advisors: cutting through the noise<\/a> and focusing on products that will benefit clients.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Access has also been a major driver of growth, as DIY investors now hold more ETF assets than advisors<\/a> in Canada, and AUM in the discount brokerage channel are growing at the fastest pace. <\/p>\n

But advisors have played a role, too, the report said, incorporating ETFs through model portfolios and fee-based solutions.<\/p>\n

The creation of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization is another \u201cstructural tailwind, helping broaden ETF access across advisory channels and reducing frictions for former MFDA advisors,\u201d the TD Securities report said.<\/p>\n

When it comes to category growth, alternative ETFs led in CAGR<\/a>, at 62 per cent, since 2016, with money market ETFs at 58 per cent and asset-allocation ETFs<\/a> at 54 per cent.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
