As a result of the significant investments Council has made to improve transit and community safety, The City continues to expand its transit peace officer numbers. On Friday, June 26, 34 new transit peace officers will graduate at a ceremony held at the Mewata Armoury, bringing the total number of transit peace officers serving The City of Calgary to 212. These graduates will support safety and security across Calgary\u2019s transit system. They will be tasked with enforcing bylaws, assisting customers and contributing to the overall well-being of transit riders, employees and the broader community.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m proud to be joining The City of Calgary as a transit peace officer and to serve the community in a role focused on safety, respect and helping people,\u201d said Kamrei Taylor, new recruit and class valedictorian. \u201cThis graduation represents a lot of hard work from our class, and I\u2019m looking forward to applying what we\u2019ve learned on the system and supporting Calgarians every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
The new graduates each bring varied backgrounds and experience to their roles. Fourteen of the new officers are graduating through the experienced officer program, which recognizes recruits who already have policing experience and allows them to complete a shorter training program so they can enter service sooner.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhether we are experienced officers or new to public safety, we share the same goal: to make transit feel safer and more welcoming for everyone,\u201d Taylor added. \u201cI\u2019m grateful for the training, the support of our instructors and the chance to begin this work alongside my classmates.\u201d<\/p>\n
Class valedictorians are selected to represent their class at the graduation ceremony and deliver remarks during the celebration.<\/p>\n
The graduation marks another step in The City\u2019s continued work to improve safety and provide a visible, supportive presence on Calgary Transit.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese graduates represent an important investment in safety across Calgary\u2019s transit system,\u201d said Deputy Chief Cory Porter, Transit Public Safety. \u201cTheir presence will help us respond to concerns, support customers and employees and continue building a transit environment where people feel safe and welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Transit Public Safety team continues to recruit and train peace officers to help address social disorder, support customers and reduce incidents on Calgary\u2019s transit system.<\/p>\n
